ALBANY — Sen. Charles Schumer says New York will likely get about $476 million in federal funding for emergency home heating aid this winter.
Schumer says the Senate is set to approve more than $5.1 billion for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides aid to low-income families and the elderly. New York is expected to receive more funding from this pot than any other state.
The full $5.1 billion will likely be passed as part of an appropriations bill that will fund several federal agencies through 2009.
Under President Bush’s original proposal, New York would have been allocated about $213 million.
Schumer’s office expects the president to sign the bill. Calls to the White House press office were not immediately returned Wednesday.
