If your son comes home this week with a picture of Jeff Gordon's No. 24 NASCAR Racer surrounded by Cub Scouts, please take special notice. Just below that souped up engine is the information you will need for your son to join Cub Scouts this month.
Most Cub Scout Packs in the Cayuga County Council of the Boy Scouts of America will be participating in a special “School Night to Join Scouting” Programs Thursday, Sept. 25. All programs will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. (To be sure, check your son's flier or call the Scout office at 252-9579).
Parents will learn how Cub Scouting works, when and where Den and Pack meetings are held, what handbook their son will need and how they can help to ensure that their son has the best possible Scouting experience.
New Scouts will learn about all the fun stuff they will be doing when they join. Pinewood Derby Races, the Cub family “Spook-o-ree” Halloween Event, Blue and Gold Dinners, earning badges of rank and arrow points to wear on their Cub Scout uniform, the Klondike Derby Winter Carnival and Cub Day Camp at Camp Rotary to name just a few.
In addition, there will also be the rewarding experience of participating in our Council-wide “Scouting for Food” Good Turn Project. On Saturday, Nov. 8, all Scouts, both new and old, will distribute “Scouting for Food” door hangers to households throughout the county returning the next Saturday, Nov. 15, to pick up donated food for the less fortunate in our community. Watching these new Scouts unloading vans and pick-up trucks full of food at the collection stations is really great. The excitement in their eyes and the satisfaction of knowing that through their efforts the burden of others in the community has been lightened.
Most Cub Packs also do community service throughout the year.
Advancing in rank Cub Scouts will complete projects that teach them about God and country. In addition, they will learn new skills and participate in activities that require family participation. Scouts also learn to pay their own way both in Scouting and in their life. With that in mind, be prepared to find a Tiger, Wolf or Bear on your front porch later this month. And if they happen to be showing their teeth, it will only be to put the bite on you to order some delicious TrailsEnd Popcorn to help support their Cub Scout Pack and Scouting in our community.
This year's line up includes a 2 1/2-pound tin of gourmet popping corn; a 9.5-ounce tin of caramel corn with peanuts; microwave boxes in unbelievable butter, butter lite and kettle corn flavors; a 23-ounce gourmet caramel corn with almonds and pecans; chocolatey caramel crunch caramel corn; a variety pack with five different microwave flavors; a three-way tin with caramel corn, chocolatey caramel crunch and cheese corn, and a five-way chocolate lovers tin. New this year is TrailsEnd trail mix.
Remember “School Night to Join Scouting” programs are scheduled at elementary schools at Owasco, Herman Avenue, Seward, Genesee, Casey Park, Cato, Cayuga Elementary, Fillmore Elementary, Port Byron, Red Creek, Weedsport and Southern Cayuga.
