GLENVILLE — An experimental plane built to look like a World War II-style fighter plane crashed into trees near the Schenectady County Airport, badly injuring its pilot.
The accident occurred about 3 p.m. Tuesday when the aircraft lost power and crashed into the trees on the northeast edge of the Schenectady County airport.
A witness who worked nearby, Jim Lott, said he saw the pilot fighting to keep the nose up but losing control of the P-51 replica at the end of the runway.
Rescuers found the aircraft upside down in the trees with the pilot conscious and trapped in the cockpit.
Glenville police say the engine was on fire and crews had to cut down trees to get to the crash site.
Investigators from the FAA will investigate the cause of the crash.
