AUBURN - A local man who faced six separate felony charges stemming from a drug deal that went awry was allowed to plead guilty in Cayuga County Court Tuesday to one count of criminal sale of a controlled substance.
In exchange for the plea deal, Brent Tanner, 21, of 62 King Street, apartment A, Port Byron, will have to testify against his brother, Frederick E. Tanner III, 19, of the same address, who was also his co-defendant.
Both men were originally charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth degree conspiracy, third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a narcotic drug.
In court, the elder Tanner brother said that on March 26 he sold nearly 3.5 grams of cocaine to an individual, when his brother spotted a surveillance vehicle across the street from their apartment. The brothers searched the man and discovered he was wearing a recording device, a sign that he was working with police.
The brothers then robbed the informant in order to take back the cocaine.
Tanner is expected to receive a shock camp eligible prison term when he is sentenced on Nov. 18.
Brent and Frederick Tanner are the sons of Frederick E. Tanner Jr., who was murdered during a botched Syracuse drug deal in 2003. The two men were only 14 and 15 years old when they saw Tyquan Pringle, who was later convicted of the murder, shoot their father in the head.
