SAVANNAH - The smell of barbecued chicken and fried dough floated in the air Saturday as families walked from booth to booth at the annual Savannah Potato Fest. The event featured carnival rides and games, potato wrestling, a car show and, of course, potatoes.
Debbie Cameron came out because she wanted to enjoy the beautiful day, she said.
“We enjoy coming out and seeing what's going on,” Cameron, of Auburn, said.
She also planned to look for a leather purse at the flea market, she said.
Renee and David Saint Amour drove all the way from Liverpool to check out this year's festival.
“We were just looking for a family activity,” Renee said. “My sister and brother-in-law live nearby, and they told us about it.”
Their children, Hayley, 5, and Michael, 2, went on rides, ate ice cream, played in the kids tent and participated in the Backyard Circus, where Hayley was a princess.
The Backyard Circus has been at the Savannah Potato Fest for at least 10 to 12 years, said Paul Chudy, the ringmaster at this year's event.
Chudy invited children to participate in shows throughout the day, with the biggest show having 40 performers.
This year's festival seems to have more to it, said David Howland, who used to work at Potato Fest.
“I come out to support them,” he said.
Howland comes every year and believes that it's probably gotten better since the time he used to work there.
Carmen Reppie and Luella Duncan, both of Wolcott, also came to the festival to support Savannah. Duncan, who has been at Potato Fest in previous years, said that the event brings people out and helps the fire department.
It also contributes to boosting Savannah's economy, Reppie added.
The two enjoyed good food and the music of the Muckland Crooners, who performed a few times throughout the day.
“The festival is important because it brings people together,” Duncan said.
