JORDAN - Fall officially starts Monday, but it came a little early to Jordan.
The annual Jordan Fall Festival, which is celebrating more than 60 years of tradition this weekend, brought families out to the Beaver Lake Nature Center Saturday.
Perennial favorites like the auto show and greased pole climb will take place on Sunday, but the whole weekend is packed with events for people of all ages. Primarily focused on providing a family friendly atmosphere, the Fall Festival is completely alcohol free, provides a smoke-free environment in all tents and pavilions, and offers activities ranging from games and rides for children to craft shows for adults.
The festival is run by volunteers, and all proceeds go back to the Jordan Community Council to be distributed as needed. Betty Wilcox, a volunteer for the festival, said, “A lot of the money eventually goes back to the children of Jordan and Elbridge in some way or another,” said festival volunteer Betty Wilcox, who praised the efforts of the many volunteers who make the event possible. “We couldn't do any of this without them,” Wilcox said.
The Jordan Fall Festival has long been a staple in the area, with people from Onondaga and Cayuga counties flocking to the grounds to enjoy the weekend. Auburn resident Paul VanScoyk said that he has been to the festival every year, except for two years while serving in the Army. He especially likes the great variety of food but said that meeting old friends is always on the agenda. “The best part is going out and seeing people you maybe haven't run into for 20 or 30 years,” he said.
Many people look forward to the car show held on Sunday, and this year is no exception, with between 500 and 600 cars expected at the festival. What does make this year different from the others is that more people are coming to enjoy all three days of activities. Wilcox said she expects an overall attendance of more than 25,000 for the weekend. “It was amazing. This is the first time I remember Friday being as busy as some Sundays in the past.”
