I can't tell you how happy I am that school is back in session. After making it through a summer filled with church camp, dance festival, a week on Cayuga Lake, a trip to Yankee Stadium, a couple of days at Darien Lake for Kingdom Bound Vacation Bible School and the dreaded back-to-school sneakers/jeans/supplies shopping, I needed a vacation from my summer vacation.
Now it's just a different kind of busy; the kind where I have a jam-packed and basically unreadable calendar to remind me of all the cross-country meets, dance classes, orthodontist appointments and volunteer group meetings, not to mention our “everyday life” schedule.
How long until summer vacation?
The Weedsport Association of Parents and Teachers is back in session as well, with lots of great fundraising and events planned for this school year. APT will be starting out the year with the elementary book fair on Sept. 24 and 25, to coincide with the Elementary School Open House to be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25. Parents will be able to meet their children's teachers, check out the book fair and get information about APT, Girl Scouts, SAVAR and CHAD, just to name a few.
The middle and high school book fair will be held Sept. 29 through Oct. 3 during lunch periods. Open house for the “big school” will be on Oct. 1; be sure to check your October news notes for all of the details.
Our first and biggest fundraiser is a new one this year and will kick off Oct. 3. After much consideration, we've decided to have a “Zap-a-Snack” fundraiser, which has proven to be extremely popular with other schools and provides us with a much-needed break from the usual wrapping paper and gift catalog format. Brochures and order forms will be sent home with a return date of Oct. 14; orders can be picked up Nov. 10 (parent-teacher conference day) with further details to be announced.
Further ahead, we'll again be offering Weedsport Elementary apparel sale and our specialty coffee/hot chocolate sale, and look for us during the CCYO basketball season at the concession stand. The funds raised by the APT go right back to our school to fund field trips, special events, the fifth-grade circus and more. There were quite a few new faces at our first meeting Sept. 9, and we hope to see many more at the next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in the high school board room.
The entire district is looking forward to Spirit Week, which is Sept. 22 through 26. There will be special events for students throughout the week, a bonfire at 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school and of course the homecoming game at 7 p.m. Friday followed by the annual dance (sponsored by the APT) for ninth through 12th grades in the high school cafeteria; admission will be $1 at the door.
If you're the parent of a junior, then you know that this is the big year: THE PROM. While the prom itself won't be held until spring, the After-Prom Committee has been hard at work since this summer to plan fundraisers for the after-prom party.
The committee consists of volunteer parents who are committed to providing a fun and safe party for everyone to enjoy, and we can always use more help and ideas. Look for a letter that will be coming home soon, but in the meantime I can tell you that we're already busy with a concession stand during home field hockey games and fleece scarf sale.
Upcoming fundraisers include the annual pulled pork and chicken barbecue on Election Day, Nov. 4; Warrior discount cards (coming soon); concession stands at home volleyball games and swim meets; can and bottle donations at Nickel Back Jack's on South Seneca Street (be sure to specify “After-Prom”), and an Applebee's Flapjack Fundraiser in January. If you have any questions about the committee, please contact Class of 2010 advisor Maribeth Lefevre at lefevrem@weedsport.org.
Be sure to read your school news notes for all the latest district information and events, and why not head out to a playing field near you to enjoy field hockey, football or cross-country contest?
There are games and meets going on throughout the week for both middle and high school students - get out there and cheer on the Warriors!
