WATERTOWN - A Fort Drum soldier and her husband were charged with sexually abusing four young children, state police said Friday.
Amanda Jansen, 26, and Christopher Jansen, 27, are also facing child pornography charges following a raid on their Watertown residence Thursday.
Police are also investigating whether there are additional victims, possibly in other states, said Capt. Mark Lincoln of the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Jansens were each charged with first-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual act, predatory sexual assault on a child, possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child, and endangering the welfare of a child. A predatory assault conviction could carry a sentence of life in prison, Lincoln said.
Police said the abuse happened throughout 2008.
Investigators said the Jansens victimized three girls and a boy. Police said the couple has children, but wouldn't say if they were the victims.
The children are aged 16 months, 5 years, 8 years and 13 years.
The arrests were based on a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The Jansens were arraigned in Pamelia Town Court and ordered held without bail at the Jefferson County Public Safety Building Jail. A court clerk said the couple did not yet have a lawyer.
Grand jury action is pending. Fort Drum spokeswoman Julie Cuppernall said the Army is leaving Amanda Jansen's prosecution to civilian authorities.
Amanda Jansen is a private, first class, with the 10th Mountain Division's 710th Brigade Support Battalion, where her primary role is as a lab technician, Cuppernall said.
Jansen, of Plainview, Texas, arrived at Fort Drum in January as her first duty assignment, Cuppernall said. Her records show she has never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
According to investigators, the Jansens met in Texas and that Christopher Jansen spent time in Kentucky. New York state police are working with their counterparts in Kentucky and Texas on the investigation., Lincoln said.
