Mistakes again cost Lakers

SOLVAY - It was a night of costly mistakes for the Skaneateles football team.
The Lakers have not beat the Bearcats in more than 10 years, and that trend continued Friday in a 27-16 loss at Solvay.

Skaneateles gave up three touchdowns in the second quarter and remain winless on the season.

“We thought that we had a good shot,” Skaneateles head coach John King said. “We seem to make mistakes at key times.”

One of those major mistakes came in the second quarter. After Skaneateles scored a field goal, they gave up a 76-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Solvay's Anthony Liquori.

“We did the same thing Week 2,” King said. “We can't seem to capitalize on our success and we leave too many holes in our defense.”

Going into the second half down 21-9, the Lakers tried to patch some of those holes and get the defense back in full force.

With a third quarter rally, Skaneateles managed to score another touchdown to edge closer.

After that score the Solvay defense held off the Laker rally.

“We stepped it up in the second half, especially our defense,” King said. “We played a tough defensive game but they don't give up. We have mental lapses and we had two key turnovers that cost us the lead.”

With a chance to take the lead at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lakers faced a fourth-and-one in Solvay territory.

Lakers quarterback Thomas Schoener attempting a quarterback sneak but the Solvay line held him up and the Bearcats took over on downs.

“With Solvay, they don't do a lot but what they do, they do well,” King said. “It was just one of those moments where you know you were really close and we just couldn't come up with it.”

The Lakers also had some passing mistakes that added up on the board for Solvay, with Schoener recording two interceptions.

“The team played really well out there,” King said. “We just put ourselves in a hole in the first half that we could not seem to get out of in the second half.”

Schoener was 16-for-35 for 192 yards and threw one touchdown. He also rushed eight times for 14 yards and a score.

Also rushing for Skaneateles was Brandon Forgham with 12 carries for 111 yards and Dylan VanHoltz contributed five carries for 18 yards.

Ryan Callahan had four catches for 56 yards, Paul Hamilton added six catches for 88 yards, Forgham tallied six catches for 36 yards and a touchdown, while Lex Johnson caught a 12-yard pass.

The Lakers (0-3) will be looking for some success in their homecoming game against Phoenix, Friday.

“We have to pay attention to small details,” King said. “It isn't like we were doing anything really wrong but these guys know that they have to earn everything they get.”
