Music is the message for Diana Jacobs.
The Auburn performer will celebrate the release of her first solo contemporary Christian music CD, “How Lovely,” this weekend with a concert at the Christian Missionary and Alliance Church. The title track expresses Jacobs' commitment to performing Christian music and the purpose it serves in her life.
“I think it explains why my priority is Christian music,” Jacobs said. “It's probably the most rewarding thing for me.”
The album as a whole chronicles Jacobs learning to trust, she said. “Waiting on You Jesus” communicates the sensation of letting go of a situation with the understanding that God will take care of the rest. Jacobs' trust was also severely tested by sending her children, Caitlyn and David, off to college. The emotions she felt and overcame are catalogued in songs named for each child.
Jacobs' children were involved in the group Jacobs' Ladder, which released a self-titled album in 2004. In the time in between, the children became involved in sports and drummer Jimmy Watts passed away. The dissolution of the group gave Jacobs, who also teaches English at Auburn High School, the chance to set out on her own.
With “How Lovely,” Jacobs departs from the more full-bodied instrumentation of her group toward a barer piano-and-vocals sound. She even covers a song from the first album, the SAMMY-nominated “Thank Him,” with this stripped-down approach.
The song “How Lovely” also addresses questions people have posed Jacobs about her return to secular blues music from the contemporary Christian genre.
“It's about that moment when I'm using my music to glorify God,” she said. “The mission of the CD is to share it with others.”

Q: What is your favorite song to play live?
A: An old hymn, “I Surrender All.” It's a traditional hymn I absolutely love.
Q: What is the first concert you remember seeing?
A: I've seen both Heart and BB King and met them backstage, and those mean more to me than The Who.
Q: Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
A: Definitely CeCe Winans, but in terms of secular music, Aretha Franklin and Ann Wilson. They're my three favorites.
Q: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one album, which would you bring?
A: CeCe Winan's “Alone in His Presence.”
Q: What is one venue you've always wanted to play and never had a chance to?
A: I honestly don't care where I play as long as I get to play. I love playing at churches.
