WEEDSPORT-There was happiness and disappointment on both sides of the field as the Weedsport field hockey team earned their first win of the season, against Cato-Meridian by a 2-1 score on Wednesday.

The Warriors were satisfied with the victory, but felt that they could have played better, while the Blue Devils were hoping for a win on their record, but were glad to have at least kept the score close.
“It was a good game,” Warriors midfielder Kaylee Napolitano said. “The game was long, and I am glad that we won but we could have worked a lot harder.”
“I am looking to get wins,” Cato-Meridian head coach Nicole Lewis said. “I am happy with losses like this though, a loss like this is much better than a shutout and right now I am happy with just that.”
The young Blue Devils squad gave Weedsport a tougher game than they may have expected from a team without a win this season, but the Warriors pulled through, holding them off to the end.
Weedsport scored a goal in each half, courtesy of Napolitano and Marybeth Diego. Brittany LaForce passed for the assist on Napolitano's score.
“I was pumped for the game,” Diego said. “We knew that we had the same record as them and so we knew we had to come out and play.”
“We should have played a lot better,” LaForce added. “We could have stepped our game up a lot more.”
Defensively, leading Weedsport was Kaitlin Hammersley who recorded one save in goal as the Warriors lead in shots on goal, 7-2.
Pacing the Blue Devils was Christine Zobel who posted the lone goal while Chelsea Terpening contributed five saves in the cage.
Lewis faced this season not knowing what the outcome would be and remains positive despite an 0-6 record. “This year I didn't know what to expect especially with only five returners from last season,” Lewis said. “They are doing a lot better than last year, they are scoring goals. You never know what to expect, they play a different game every time they go out and they played well today, we suffered a few injuries that hurt us as well.”
Cato-Meridian faces Homer today, which will be a true test to the team's ability to try to overcome adversity and get a win on their record.
“It is going to be a tough game,” Lewis said. “They will be playing on turf, which is a much faster game. They have never played on turf this year and will need conditioning. Hopefully they play well and hold off Homer.”
Despite what happens for the rest of the season, Lewis is hoping that next season will show more success for the team who will only be losing one player to graduation.
The Warriors are 1-4-2 going into a match against Cortland on Friday and the team will try to better their record.
“Obviously we have had a lot of ups and downs this season,” Weedsport head coach Theresa Leonardi said. “We are working hard to right the ship and stay on path. We will have to play well to beat Cortland and are trying to pick up intensity and quality of play right now.”
