As it turns out, the Moravia cross country teams don't need to be complete to dominate.

Moravia senior Jason Phillips runs in a cross country meet at Fillmore Golf Course Tuesday evening. Phillips took first with a time of 17:51.8, the third fastest time ever posted by a Moravia runner on their home course.
Jason Phillips once again won the boys meet, while Alicia McLaughlin taking first for the girls as both Blue Devils' teams finished incomplete against Lansing, Marathon and Tioga at Fillmore Glen Golf Course on Tuesday.

Lansing scored 18 to win the boys' meet, Marathon tallied 44 points and both the Tigers and Blue Devils didn't finish as a team. As it turns out, Phillips did all the finishing any of the teams would need when he bolted past everyone, winning with a time of 17:51.8, recording the third fastest time ever by a Moravia boys runner on the team's home course.

“He was definitely on a mission this afternoon,” Moravia coach Hunsinger said. “Considering he wasn't pushed very much, he had a really good race.”

It was the fastest time run by a Blue Devils athlete at Fillmore Glen in seven years, just 22 seconds off Rick Badman's best time at home, set in 1991. Lansing's Josh Barber was the only runner close to Phillips, and it was a stretch, considering he finished at 18:40. Also finishing for the Blue Devils were Adam Wiethuechther in 12th (23:09), Alex Seaman in 21st (27:51) and Richie Bentley at 22nd (30:01).

In the girls race, the Blue Devils could have won if they had one more runner compete, but the small team has just four athletes on the team. McLaughlin had a strong, but close win at 25:00, with Lansing's Shanna Swanson right behind her (25:03).

“Nobody had a complete team today, but Alicia did well,” Hunsinger said. “She was on a little bit of a mission, too. Two years ago, she was in the state meet, but missed it last year. Hopefully, she will stay 100 percent healthy this season.”

Aimee Glenister finished a strong third overall for Moravia (25:07), while Kayla Slater took sixth (27:22).

Now, the Blue Devils look forward to competing in the Auburn Invitational on Saturday, along with Weedsport, Auburn, Jordan-Elbridge and Southern Springs - among other teams. Phillps has taken the boys' race the last two seasons, but strong competition - especially from other local runners - should only serve as more intense motivation. As an added bonus, Moravia's boys team could do something it hasn't been able to do for seven years.

“We should be running with a complete team,” Hunsinger said. “We've had a couple of boys join the team recently and they've had enough practices so that they might be ready to run. We'll see.”
