A man who started his day in a grand jury screening process ended up in Cayuga County Court Tuesday, where he denied he was the same man named on a fugitive warrant from Ohio.
Cayuga County District Attorney Christopher Valdina said that during the grand jury selection process, James Geiger, 31, admitted that he had been previously charged with a crime in Ohio. After further examination, it was discovered that a man with the same name and date of birth had been wanted in Ohio since 2004 for larceny, illegal use of food stamps and Medicaid fraud.
During his arraignment that same day, Geiger said he was not the same man named in the warrant, despite being a former Ohio resident, having a prior felony charge from that state, and being born on April 17, 1977, the date of birth for the man who was wanted.
As the arraignment progressed, Geiger said that he had not resided in Ohio since 2003, and that he could not have committed the listed crimes because the warrant was signed in 2004.
While the warrant was signed in 2004, Valdina said the list of charges, which were not dated, could have occurred at any time prior to that date.
Cayuga County Judge Mark Fandrich said it was unlikely that there could be two James Geigers from Ohio with the same date of birth, but admitted that the matter needed to be looked into further.
Fandrich set bail at $500 and set an appearance date for Oct. 21.
