Palin wasn't chosen to draw Hillary Clinton votes

Monday, September 15, 2008 11:22 PM EDT

On Susan Reimer's “So This Is What Being Pandered To Is Like:” It takes a huge amount of arrogance on the part of Hillary Clinton supporters to automatically assume that McCain's vice presidential pick is an effort to gain their support.
Hillary supporters have no regard for the sanctity of life.

McCain knows his target audience will, in fact, notice that Governor Sarah Palin is “anti-abortion, a member of the NRA, and thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution. (By the way, in science, a theory has yet to be proven.)

McCain is after right-wing conservative Christians who were unsure of his stance on their values; he is not pandering to Hilleristas.

Also, there are millions of people who love and cherish people with Down Syndrome. It's not just an evangelical thing.

Since we defeated Nazi Germany, many people actively shun the notion that we have to create a perfect specimen before giving birth. Not only is Reimer's article sexist, biased against Christians, and prejudiced against persons with disabilities, but it displays the ignorance of ageism, too.

So, McCain is 72. My grandfather was 72 when he started a new career as an architect. Life doesn't stop at 50. In my family we don't retire unless we have to.

Americans need to stop mocking the aged and start respecting them. The Democrats sound like adolescents every time they say McCain is “another grouchy, old, rich, white guy.”

If they favor Clinton over Palin, say so. Don't reduce Palin to an “inexperienced skirt who will be in over her head.”

If they prefer Obama, fine. Don't reduce an American hero who is still on top of his game to an old man riddled with cancer. He beat cancer four times. I call that heroic!

" No one said she didn't have the right to express her opinions -- I just also have the right to disagree vociferously. Sounds like YOU are the one who is offended and condescending. Puh-leeze. "

" Farmers gal... why so offended? And condescending? And self-righteous? Verbalizing differing opionions is part of what makes this country so great, Ms. Vivante makes some very good points, which she is entitled to do. This is shaping up to be an election suitable for the history books. Finally. "

" I refuse to allow conservatives to claim exclusive ownership of the phrase "pro-life". Let's get real, we're ALL pro-life. No one, regardless of their political or religious affiliation, wants to see a person die. Except a majority of conservatives, of course, who strongly support the death penalty. No, to be accurate, conservatives are anti-choice. Not pro-life, ANTI-CHOICE. They want to tell our mothers, wives and daughters what they can and can't do with their own body. Talk about Nazis! "

" Senator Clinton and Governor Palin are proof that women can and do diverge on important issues.

Even on the question of whether women should vote!

Most people are totally in the dark about HOW the suffragettes won votes for women, and what life was REALLY like for women before they did.

Suffragettes were opposed by many women!

Now you can find out the shocking true story of the suffragettes in a new, free e-mail series -- The Privilege of Voting.

Go behind the scenes in a real-life soap opera and discover ALL that happened to set the stage for women to finally win the vote.

" Hate to tell you, but the Nazis were anti-abortion -- not a good example at all.

Personally, all the things she is for are reasons I'll vote against her.

Choice is a woman's right, thank goodness.

I believe in gun rights but think way to many NRA types are whackos.

Religion does not belong in schools -- that means out with creationism.

Just because YOUR granddad lived past 72 doesn't mean McCain, with his entirely different family history and personal health history will do the same. My ex-father-in-law came from a long line of men tracing back to the 1400s in Holland who lived to 75 ON AVERAGE. He was a very healthy, fit and trim man -- and he died at the age of 46 from a burst appendix. Chances of McCain kicking the bucket sooner rather than later have nothing to do with your granddad or my ex-father-in-law -- they have to do with HIS family and HIS health -- and those aren't looking any too good.

BTW, he had cellmates in Vietnam who didn't consider him a particular hero -- they considered him a hothead who brought more pain down on himself and whom they would not trust to be the man with his finger on the red button. "
