Driver left family of hit cat heartbroken

Sunday, September 14, 2008 11:45 PM EDT

One cold morning in November, while my 13-year-old son was delivering his newspapers, he found a stray cat and begged me, “Mom, please can we keep him. I promise I will pay for everything out of my paper route money.” I agreed, knowing how expensive it would be, given the fact that we already had one other cat and a dog. I couldn't bring myself to tell him no. He then came home with us and became a very special part of our family.
On Sept. 10, around 5 p.m. he got hit in front of our house on Van Anden by a lady in a blue Buick. My 9-year-old daughter and I and a few of her friends watched as you hit him and asked the neighbors, “was that a squirrel?” They told you no and you drove off, and didn't return. We watched him take his last breath, crying our hearts out.

For the record, his name was Pumpkin Roll. He was orange with swirls and he had a perfect shaped heart on his belly. At night, he slept under the covers next to our other cat, our dog and my daughter.

Pumpkin Roll now sleeps in our backyard under four feet of dirt, because thanks to you, you kept going and we couldn't afford to do anything else for Pumpkin Roll.

We hope you can sleep just as well as us tonight, and each and every other night. We are all heart broken. On behalf of me and my kids, we will pray for you - Not!

" Smurf, could you reform your statement into something coherent so that we know what you are trying to say? "

" Stray or no stray some animals are children to those who cant have any.. Does not make a difference if its an animal or a child they all stray and they all wonder in many directions they are forgotten and picked up by nice people willing to take them in and make them a member of thier home Does that give anyone the right to decide to leave the scene of any accident. Who says it can be a hit and run and be justice to say oh my was that a squirrel or was that a persons child...I personally think some of these people writing in are related to the lady in the BLUE COLD DEATH BUICK why should one chase a murderer when if she wasnt as bloody cold as her death car would of had the sense to stop to make sure what she hit in the first place.. Stop and think could of been your child.. Then what kind of compassionate note would you be sending to your public newspaper...

" You have to keep your cat in the house or accept that the possibility that it will be hit by a car. The driver isn't guilty of killing your cat, but she is guilty of leaving the scene of an accident. I feel bad for you and your children but you have to also accept some responsibility. "

" What was she supposed to do? Apologize and bring the kitty back to life so your family can be happy again? You would still be heart broken - would you not? And still might have written this letter. "

" As sory as I feel for your kids, if you pick up a stray cat, you almost have to expect that they're going to continue to roam and not recognize the boundaries of your property.
Go to the animal shelter, get a decently red cat,and make your kids happy.
If the woman stopped to ask the neighbors, I'm wondering why you didn't run after HER? "
