Legislators don't need gas money to go to their jobs

Thursday, September 11, 2008 11:42 PM EDT

I was very upset to read on the front page of the paper Sunday, Sept. 7, about the debate on our county legislators being paid 50.5 cents a mile to do their county business. They are elected by the people and receive a salary. Most have other jobs also. I had no idea. We pay huge county taxes. No one I know of gets reimbursed for gas money to go to work, and these are elected people!
I know of many who are working evening and weekend jobs to earn gas money, so they can go to their full-time work. There are many senior citizens now working again, to pay bills and buy groceries. Cutting down needs to start at the top - not with the folks who are struggling. Also, why doesn't Auburn, which is also in Cayuga County, make it more consumer friendly? There are plenty of parking spaces, because shops are closed. There are empty shops and places all up and down Genesee Street. Most need to go only to Cayuga County Office Building, the courthouse, etc. Better take someone along with you to find a kiosk -- no meters. Why and at what expense? Will we soon have to pay to even enter Auburn, N.Y.? You are pushing people out of Auburn and this county.

" I still do not think it is unreasonable for an employer to reimburse travel expenses. I wouldn't take a job where they expected me to pay out of pocket for gas for travel on company business. Just because the "company" is New York State and the "employer" is the tax payer, it's no different. Travel on company business, the company should expect to pay. I'd rather see them drive themselves than take the company jet.... "

" 'To pay or not to pay' is not the question. The answer is DO NOT RE-ELECT THE PENNY PINCHER'S OF THEIR MONEY, BECAUSE THEY ARE GOING TO THE BANK WITH THE TAX PAYER'S MONEY. They are taking care of themselves FIRST, not you. "

" Huh? Anywhere I have ever worked, I had a travel budget to cover mileage and other expenses if I had to travel for work purposes.

However, I don't get free benefits for life -- irritated is 100% right about that! "

" Funny how people are upset that the Legislators get mileage checks, which amount to almost nothing when you compare it to thier FREE lifetime benefits ALL paid for by YOU! Anyone else get free lifetime benefits with thier job? I didnt think so. "
