Port Byron runner Christian Cobb wins the boys' race against Weedsport with a new course record (16:47).
The Panthers' Christian Cobb set a new course record, taking first place (16:47) in the team's first meet of the season but could not keep the Panthers from losing the boys' meet, 20-43 in Port Byron.

“Despite Christian taking first, Weedsport was able to place their next five to push us out,” Port Byron head coach Mike Hermann said.

For the Warriors, Mike Greer came in second (17:21), while Jon Bos took third (17:44), Andrew Smith finished in fourth (17:46), Zack Field ended in fifth (18;37) and Jason Ryan rounded out the team in sixth place(19:02).

Will Rice earned a ninth place finish for the Panthers (19:53), while Zac Leja came in 10th (20:13), Tyler Wellington followed in 11th (21:24) and Adam Hawker took 12th (22:19).

In the girls' race. the Warriors took the top four spots and won, 16-40 with Erin Daly earning first place for Weedsport (21:16). Ashley Edmunds finished in second place (21:25), Alyssa O'Bryan came in third (22:15), Nicole Greer recorded fourth (22:50) and Michelle Donahue grabbed sixth place (23:00).

Port Byron's Katie Wyckoff took the fifth spot (23:00), while Felicia Darrow earned seventh place (23:46) and Amanda Vitale followed up in eighth (23:56).

In ninth place was the Panthers' Nicole Carey (24:20). The freshman made her varsity debut in the first meet and Heather Kurtz ended up in 10th (27:10).

“Weedsport took the top four spots to keep our score low,” Hermann said. “We ran as competitively as we could, I was really pleased with our times.”

Port Byron boys and girls are both 0-1 so far as they travel to the Chittenango Invitational Saturday, along with Weedsport.

“We are looking to gain some experience in that meet,” Hermann said.

“Chittenango is the same course that the sectionals. This is a really big meet because every team in the section is looking to get a preview of the course. This is our chance to see what it is like and give us a chance to run on it early to prepare ourselves.”
