Why haven't our city fathers done something about the old Kalet Building? Every time I walk by I see more deterioration on the front of the building.
Regardless of what McCain or his camp says, he picked a woman to get the women's vote, not for the good of the country.
If you would listen it is not going to be the same as the last four years. As least Sarah has always been proud to be an American.
Remember this -- if Obama was president during 911 the official language in this country would be Islamic and America would be a thing of the past. Go American --- support John and Sarah, a refreshing choice.
What scares me about McCain is the warrior mentality: endless war and fear mongering. These avoidable and often misused creations distract us from the real things we crave as average Americans: civil liberties, prosperity, progress, opportunity, health, safety, security

Taking thousands of dollars from taxpayers to work in YOUR OWN HOME might be TECHNICALLY "legal" but it is CERTAINLY NOT ethical--especially if you're rtrying to posit yourself as some kind of "change" candidate! Sounds like typical Republican economic opportunism to me, i.e., 'more of the same"--but why should that surprise anyone?
McCain also said that she opposed putting polar bears on an endangered list because it placed obstacles in the way of Oil and Gas companies drilling and exploration.
Here we have one of the world's most magnificent animals, and a top predator in the food chain, and Palin doesn't give a crap about its welfare. Why should we be surprised--"God" will take care of the polar bears, right?
Palin DID ask about banning certain books from the library, but backed down under pressure. Amazing, it is, Chris, how you cherry-pick your info.
According to your OWN cited source:
When the librarian refused to concur with Palin's request "Palin initially requested Emmons’ resignation, along with those of Wasilla’s other department heads, in October 1996. The decision caused “a stir” in the small town, according to a newspaper account at the time. According to a widely circulated e-mail from Kilkenny, “city residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter.”
This is worrisome enough!.
As far as being a Buchananite, or belonging to a secessionist party, that concerns me not. What IS relevant, is that this woman is another "Bushy"--just 4 more years of the same policies, the same religious ignorance being put into policy, and the same, hardheaded, stubborn, uncompromising and vindictive attitude which has paralyzed government in Washington for the last 8 years. And worst of all--MORE WAR, MORE WASTED LIVES AND MONEY
More tax breaks for the Rich--the Middle Class be damned. McCain's tax breaks would cost an estimated $417 billion compared to Barack's $360 billion. Bottom line, Chris, is that this woman is STILL manifestly unfit to stand behind a 72-year-old man in the White House and be trusted with the faet of this nation. And as soon as this election gets back to being about issues and not personality as the Republican spokesman recently said it was (how about THAT for Republican priorities?!), the sooner we will start debunking what's important. "

Misleading is just a different FORM of lying -- it is still deliberate deception. There is such a thing as "lying by omission" -- purposely misleading by NOT saying something is still a form of lying. Deception is deception, whether it is an active lie or a deliberate misleading or a deliberate leaving something out to mislead -- they are all dishonest and deceitful. If the listeners are deceived on purpose, then it really doesn't make a difference if the deception was a straight-faced lie, a misleading or an purposeful omission - the result is the same, no difference.
I have to disagree, cm -- it's how politicians behave on the big issues that matter, not silly symbolic stuff like a pin, which has been blown way out of proportion. No, you can't trust Obama -- you can't trust any politician. But the pin business is all spin and no big deal at any level, while outright lying about corruption and about your own record of support, that's a whole 'nother level, as Terry Bradshaw would say. That's seriously untrustworthy, while the pin is such a nothing that it doesn't even qualify as an "issue."
I couldn't care less if the guy wore a pin or not. I couldn't care less if HE doesn't care if he wears the pin. If afterwards one of his handlers tells him that there are too many people out there who DO care if he wears a pin and he'd better wear it and fudge through any questions about whether he did or not -- so what. It's not like outright lying about your voting record, your support for pork barrel projects, or other truly important issues. "

Lets look at the lies that have been debunked so far:
* Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.
* She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.
* She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She’s been registered as a Republican since May 1982.
* Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesy" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.
* Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/sliming_palin.html
And to Karl's moronic point about charging the state for per diem...
She billed Alaska for per diem expenses to which she was perfectly entitled, including travel expenses that were roughly 75% less than the previous governor racked up, and actually declined to be reimbursed for some expenses she could have claimed.
Karl's gripe is that she billed the state for “lodging” while staying at her own home in Wasilla; the governor’s official home is in Juneau (which is 600 miles away) but if you actually read the report, she didn't bill the state for staying at her own residence. The only amount on the line, $60, is for meals and incidentals (M&IE).
Thats what people do when they work at home. I know thats what I do and it is correct and perfectly legal. Not illegal, not unethical, and not a scandal.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.
Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post."

Let's rather call the majority of the media "corporate controlled" -- it swings to the so-called "liberal" or the so-called "conservative" depending which better fits the strategy of the corporate masters, making those terms ever more meaningless. Which is what I've been saying all along.
The last (i.e. most recent) expressed word doesn't mean it is a candidate's true feeling on a subject. The point here is that the woman said one thing and then later said she never said that. That's not misleading, it's lying, and it's also stupid if it's easy enough for any member of the public to call up footage and/or audio proof of her saying both.
Wearing a pin or not wearing a pin is no where near the same magnitude of backing a huge and wasteful pork-barrel project or not. A pin on the label is not even a drip compared to the Niagara Falls of the Bridge to Nowhere or the corruption charges, just for starters.
Finally, most people learned in grade school that "Everyone else does it" is not a valid excuse for wrongful behavior. Yes, other candidates also lie and mislead on purpose (both of which are equally reprehensible forms of deception) -- but that doesn't make it acceptable or OK, or even a reasonable excuse.
Your arguments do not stand up to logic; to sum up:
--Number of articles is irrelevant to prove truth of content.
--The media is neither "liberal" nor "conservative" but rather opportunist on behalf of their corporate controllers.
--The last word doesn't prove it is the true word.
--Lying when you can be proven to be lying with video and audio evidence on which anyone can lay hands is arrogant as well as just plain stupid.
--Trying to put a spin on a hostile question about a trivial lapel pin is nothing compared to lying outright about corruption and wasting the tax payers' money on a grand scale.
--The fact that other candidates also mislead the voters does not excuse the behavior. "

"THE SPIN: Called "Original Mavericks," the ad asserts the Republican senator has fought pork-barrel spending, the drug industry and fellow Republicans, reforming Washington in the process, and credits Palin with similarly changing Alaska by taking on the oil industry, challenging her own party and ditching the bridge project that became a national symbol of wasteful spending.
Obama spokesman Bill Burton came back with fighting words. "Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," he said.
Burton said McCain would merely carry on supporting President Bush's economic, health, education, energy and foreign policies, and that means "anything but change."
THE FACTS: Palin did abandon plans to build the nearly $400 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport. But she made her decision after the project had become an embarrassment to the state, after federal dollars for the project were pulled back and diverted to other uses in Alaska, and after she had appeared to support the bridge during her campaign for governor."

Condos next door -- yuck. There are a lot of reasons I live in the country, and a little more privacy is one of them. It's true I am now living in a "village" and I have next-door neighbors in a way I haven't had in years, but the one, who is old and frail, has windows placed in such a way as we can't see into each other's houses, and the other lady and I just have curtains/shades over the few that face right at each other. My rear view is over a gorgeous crabapple tree right outside the back of the house that blocks the view looking in (and to some degree also looking out), but is so lovely that I can't complain (can hardly wait to see it in full bloom in spring).
I work with some folks who love city living. I respect their choice for themselves, but I could never do it. I am not comfortable in large masses of people all together and find cities physically and emotionally draining (while others find cities envigorating - I have always wondered if those are the people sucking all the energy out of me, like vampires, LOL!)
My co-workers get snippy about how people have abandoned cities instead of staying and working to improve them.
I see it the other way around -- I say the cities sucked up all the jobs long ago and forced people to abandon the countryside to come live in dirty, crowded, noisy cities if they wanted to have work -- that happened long before people started leaving the cities to RETURN to the countryside.
To me, any place where there is a concentration of living beings, there is more waste and pollution. Whether it was chamberpots emptied out the door into the gutter in the Middle Ages or fumes from bus and truck traffic in more modern times, larger numbers of people produce more waste, more pollution, more traffic and crowding, etc.
The countryside, I am sorry to say, USED to be a more healthy place to live. But since the advent of industrialized farming, the countryside is now also just as polluted and unhealthy as more urban areas.
And having grown up in suburban suburbia, I can testify that it is no happy medium, but a back-biting, soul-less nasty place as well (generalization).
In some small towns, you can still find community and some measure of healthful living. But only in some very few, and I wouldn't claim too much of that in my new town.
We've allowed our own nests to be fouled and there are no more truly clean and healthy places left to live. Pretty places, yes. Convenient places, yes. Reasonably comfortable places, yes. But not too many truly healthy places. Good luck with your influx of many new neighbors. "

But WE get it!!!
We are gonna vote for Obama even though he sucks too. Your personality comes thru loud and clear like your profession but a reminder, this is a community forum NOT your personal diatribe of cut and past, slam anybody else's views column. Change the channel already !! Honestly have u thought about being the liberal columnist for the paper? That would free the rest of us up here a bit as the ones who enjoy the negative bantor you thrive on could just post there. U hollered at me once for "trying to direct the tone". Heed your own words. Try posting about something else, u do have a life right that involves more than McCain and Palin or have the chemtrails (ROTFLMAO) gotton to your brain? There have been MANY that post about other things and some who are too afraid just to post anything because of all the mud slinging if things arent presented to your liking.
Take this as constructive critisism as I tried to be nice on how I worded on some of us feel. Have a nice Sunday! "

It will be interesting to see how the american press covers this, if they do at all. The Citizen is surely unlikely to include any mention even if an AP wire report goes out.

The difference is that you and others like yourself base your opinions on worthless lies and half-truths fed to you by lying scumbags out to protect their own self interest, which does not include you, me or the rest of the hoi polloi. "

The sniping, insulting and name-calling behavior here makes no distinction between "liberal" or "conservative" -- those labels are entirely irrelevant to the discussion, as I have read posts totally lacking in class from ALL sides of the various issues here. It's a pointless, counterproductive and low-class behavior into which anyone can slip once in a while, but, really, we ought to try to hold ourselves to a little higher standards. "

theres still hope for today, but not counting on it!
movedsouth: 'nose' very true, especially in Washington!
yes, I am usually blunt with my friends, as I am here. I do not let others walk all over me, and I dont back down easily for the ideals I believe in. However I do listen to the 'other side' being a Libra, I try too hard to fix things that are beyond my control, so I cede to a semi-happy medium, which is really the best we can all do! "

" It's amazing the tone of liberals. Stupid, FOS, shut up, etc. If this is what a liberal is, why would any sane person not want to be a conservative? "
You've got to be kidding, right ms?
Really! Of course, the tone of the conservatives is quite different. Just ask anyone over at faux news.
Since it is not obvious to you why any sane person would not want to be a conservative, so I'll spell it out for you.
Conservatives are:
Shallow,
selfish,
greedy,
ignorant,
gullible,
stupid (at least the blind followers are) - your leaders play you for fools,
bloodthirsty,
authoritarian,
power-hungry,
uncaring,
inconsiderate,
lacking in compassion,
mean-spirited,
intolerant,
intolerable,
hypocritical,
overly judgemental,
ruthless,
duplicitous,
conniving,
crooked,
pond scum of the lowest order,
etc,etc,etc...
Ooops, pardon me. I take that last one back. At least pond scum has a valid reason for its existence within the ecosystem.
I'm sure I missed a few dozen, but you should get the picture.
Does this answer your question ms? "

Generally what we are insulting is your inane comment, not you personally. So put that in your pipe and smoke it! "

" Q-tip (still can't bring myself to type that name!) for the life of me, I can't understand why you even frequent this site at all if you can't stand political dialogue?
EVERY other newspaper forum which I have seen is EXACTLY the SAME. I'm sure thee are other forums which you would find more to your liking?
I might add that the entire future and health of our nation is tied intimately with this election. If you're just going to "tune up, and tune it out" then you're part of the problem!
Get involved!
YOUR future and YOUR economic well-being is at stake here, as well as mine and ours!
It's NOT THE 60's anymore, Flower Child! "
Well, I come here to check out things from a place where I grew up. Politics is everywhere, so why does it have to be the only thing you people ever talk about????? Does anyone ever have input about what goes on in Auburn? Not the bad things, but anything that would constitute something good? I could rant and rave about all the cool stuff happening in my area, but who would care? At least, people that visit here either live or have lived here. I thought this would be a positive forum. It's more like a shark tank. "

" Just read Consumer Reports and it's amazing how we are being ripped off on our daily use products. I knew this, but it was good to see in print. Example Scott Soft tissue, originally advertised as 50% more than competitors at 600 sheets, dropped down to 500, and now 369. But there's more the sheets are smaller, and yes the price has increased. Tropicana OJ went from 96 oz to 89 oz and told CR it was to redesign the container so it wouldn't gurgle when pouring. Also price increase. I guess I wasn't pouring right because it didn't gurgle. E-mailed Scott, they sent 3 $1 coupons and would pass it on to the proper dept. In other words, here's some coupons, so what. "
I hear ya movedsouth. Its all about companies padding their wallets to make their shareholders happy. Companies call it redesigns or "going green for the sake of the environemnt" of their containers. If you have noticed most detergents now come in smaller containers, yet claim you need to use less. Haha, what BS. Best way to combat this type of behavior? Dont buy their products. Besides most store (generic) brands actually come from the same companies that make the name brands, just packaged differently. Companies with consumer influence (due to an established Brand Name) know this and prey the dim-witted shopers in our general public. "

sadly, but honestly, most of my life I have felt the Pres was the PR person for the USA.
He does the hand-shaking, the meet & greets, puts on the fancy dinners, and usually delivers BAD news with the State of the Union speech.
As I age, I realize he's still the PR guy, but it seems no matter what he does he gets 'bottom of totem pole' when it all hits the fan HE's to blame!
reality is HE's NOT the ONLY ONE to blame. the other 535 have EGOs beyond the average person, they have freebies, low interest mortgages, and they live off the tax payers for their private lying agendas!
Take the Kennedy family alone, they are greasier than my mechanic! They live in mansions and think they are above the law, which most judges agree, no matter what wrongs they have done they merely have hands slapped!
Its all in who you know, how much money you have...well for them: the 'knows' are over 40yrs worth and the money came from scamming tax payers!
No matter WHO wants change as a Pres. it is hard to break the barriers of the 535 who do not want to give up their 'greased' lifestyles. They will use all means of scandals to keep it that way! "
