The ‘Warmer' sounds

The music of Jon Peterson and Donna Dennihy is a little more accessible than the songs they cover.
This weekend, the acoustic duo will celebrate the release of its second CD, “Getting Warmer.” It'll be supported at its Blarney Stone party by guitarist Chris Bauso and percussionist G.D. Bower, who contributed to the album.

Recorded at Sub Cat Studios in Skaneateles, the album is the product of years of writing and recording. Peterson and Dennihy, both music teachers, spent as many as three days a week convening to work on the album in their free time.

“It was hard to stop adding more to it,” Peterson said. “It was exhilarating.”

Peterson and Dennihy met through a mutual friend about 12 years ago and began sharing their own music with each other in their kitchens. The music they write draws comparisons to a range of artists spanning the Indigo Girls, Nickel Creek and John Gorka. Their style cultivates a relaxed atmosphere at their shows.

“There's a lot of smiling, a lot of listening and tuning into what's happening,” Peterson said. “We're just having fun sharing music.”

The duo plays roughly once a month by request only. When it performs, the duo sprinkles seldom-heard covers into their set lists.

“We like a lot of B-side covers,” Peterson said. “Finding good songs that aren't overplayed is our specialty.”

Five questions with Jon Peterson

A: Neil Young at the Cobo Arena in Detroit.
