SARANAC LAKE - Strong winds are fanning a forest fire in the northern Adirondacks near Paul Smiths College.
All firefighters in Franklin County have been called to fight the fire on unoccupied land southeast of the wooded lakeshore campus.
Royce Cole, a captain with the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department, said parts of the fire area are accessible only by all-terrain vehicles.
College spokesman Ken Aaron said students weren't evacuated. He said the wind was blowing away from campus.
In an “all call,” the Franklin County emergency dispatch center asked all firefighters in the county to report to a staging area at the intersection of state routes 30 and 86, right at the college's gateway.
