Regarding the comment by someone indicating it is a "ploy" by the Republicans to select a woman as their vice presidential nominee, would it have been a "ploy" had Hillary Clinton been the liberal presidential candidate? Or is it a "ploy" to run the candidate they selected?

Wasn't eight years of Bush enough? Do you really want four more years of the same stuff?

I'm calling in regard to the people that use David's Fields at Metcalf Avenue: You have trash littered all over and garbage --- shame on you, you're pigs! There are refuse containers directly in front of you so why don't you use them?

In Monday's column Carole Estabrook asks "Who is Sarah Palin anyway?" Simple, she's everything you're not.

I think John McCain's running mate was so into her own accomplishments that she forgot she had a young lady growing up and failed to have a conversation with her, so now the penalties are going to be paid.

" More Bad news about Palin--CNN ran a piece yesterday where people who served with her said that her "leadership style" is , for all intents and purposes, exactly the SAME type as Bush--arrogant, not interested in compromise, my-way-or-the-highway, very abrasive and not cognizant of the limitations of her/his office. This is just proof that if--God forbid--she were to ever get elected with McCain, that again, we would have "more of the same" in Washington. MOre divisiveness and more "do nothing" Congress--because there's no way the Congress would let her get away with a lot of what she would want to do.
Not only that, but the Republiscums are lying about her "accomplishments". She did NOT sell the jet at a profit on eBay--it sold to a private owner AT A LOSS.
She WAS for the "bridge to nowhere" before she was against it--yet kept the money anyway which had been allocated for it. So much for a "reformer"!
Secondly, either Palin or Rove's mi,ions have apparently gotten to the list of witnesses in the case she is under investigation for--apparently now, the seven witnesses which were going to testify in the case against Palin about abuse-of-power have been either intimidated or paid off to not testify willingly; they are requiring subpoenas for them now. How sickening, really--here's an important, highly relevant issue having everything to do with leadership qualities and abuse-of-power issues that should be front-and-center for the voting public to be informed about, and these small-minded little nitwits are trying to obfuscate the facts for political gain--the good of the country be damned!
Sometimes I think Americans deserve the crappy, corrupt leaders we have protected...what we need is a good armed revolution!
And why has she been hiding from the press ince her speech? "

sadly, but honestly, most of my life I have felt the Pres was the PR person for the USA.
He does the hand-shaking, the meet & greets, puts on the fancy dinners, and usually delivers BAD news with the State of the Union speech.
As I age, I realize he's still the PR guy, but it seems no matter what he does he gets 'bottom of totem pole' when it all hits the fan HE's to blame!

reality is HE's NOT the ONLY ONE to blame. the other 535 have EGOs beyond the average person, they have freebies, low interest mortgages, and they live off the tax payers for their private lying agendas!

Take the Kennedy family alone, they are greasier than my mechanic! They live in mansions and think they are above the law, which most judges agree, no matter what wrongs they have done they merely have hands slapped!
Its all in who you know, how much money you have...well for them: the 'knows' are over 40yrs worth and the money came from scamming tax payers!

No matter WHO wants change as a Pres. it is hard to break the barriers of the 535 who do not want to give up their 'greased' lifestyles. They will use all means of scandals to keep it that way! "

Pursuant to a previous topic - all of you who refuse to blame the preznit for any of our problems, why should we bother to have one at all? If the preznit is not doing anything, what's the point? We have congress and the senate to blame for everything after all, right? You crack me up. "

" I don't know why Auburn doesn't have Planned Parenthood, but I HEARD it was because the conservatives drove it out of town. Now, of course, they are trying to get rid of the maternity ward at the hospital to take care of the births of all those unwanted children.

There is East Hill Family Medical, which tries to fill in as best they can for Planned Parenthood.

But talk about stupid, in a PRISON town, they don't have a place where young people, who are going to be screwing around no matter what they are "taught" - they have no easy access to either birth control or abortions. You'd think the conservatives would support birth control to stem the tide of unwanted pregnancies in the first place -- but no....

Public schools should get adequate public funding. Private schools should be funded privately. If you choose to send your child to a private school, you should expect to pay the fees for it. That's pretty simple -- if parents want credits for education, then they can use the public system. If it isn't adequate, let that be the motivation to get them involved towards improving public education.

Otherwise, I think the government should fund my desire to have a private limo, as an equal alternative to public transportation which I don't choose to use.... "

" I don't know how the whole "School vouchers" thing came up here, but lets get one thing perfectly straight--when a politician talks about, or shows support for "private schools" what they are doing is using political "code words" for RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS.
PERIOD.
This is just the camouflaging nomenclature currently in vogue for the government to throw yet another bone to the Religious Right and use yours and my tax monies for the life support of religious schools--which they have NO BUSINESS doing! This amounts to a governmental funding of religious indoctrination, which is expressly forbidden by the Establishment Clause of the Constitution.
In 1999, in Ohio (?) 96% of parents who received vouchers used them for religious schools.
And here's the kicker--an extensive recent study has shown that contrary to popular myth, religious-schooled students DO NOT do better than public schools.
From the New York Times, 2006:
WASHINGTON, July 14 — The Education Department reported on Friday that children in public schools generally performed as well or better in reading and mathematics than comparable children in private schools. The exception was in eighth-grade reading, where the private school counterparts fared better.
The report, which compared fourth- and eighth-grade reading and math scores in 2003 from nearly 7,000 public schools and more than 530 private schools, found that fourth graders attending public school did significantly better in math than comparable fourth graders in private schools. Additionally, it found that students in conservative Christian schools lagged significantly behind their counterparts in public schools on eighth-grade math. Full Report (pdf)

charters are similar to public school except theres a waiting list and the teach on a totally different level.

private schools are paid for by the parents UNLESS they are poor and can get a voucher from the state.

He lived there for over 25 years, and while the price of rent went up all around him, his did not. The landlord was always offering him $1,000-$2,000 to move out -- because he'd recoup that in the first month with a new tenant. My friend stayed until he was ready to leave, then took the money to help pay his moving costs.

Rent-control was meant to help the truly poor, esp. those on fixed incomes. If you happened to get into one when you were down and out, then got a great job later, you just plain got lucky. "

Unless all are in the same class the same number of teachers are required. By taking funds away from the public school it suffers. If you opt to send your kid to a charter school it is great as the quality of the program is better. But pay for it. Don't make the kids in public school suffer cuts in programs to pay for tuition in the wealthy families education. It is just widening the gap between rich and poor. Charter schools should be available if you want to pay for them, but don't cause school taxes to increase for the average joe to educate a child born to an affluent family. "

AJ---the meaning of the word median is described in the dictionary: Relating to or constituting the middle value in a distribution. Usually the "middle value" is the average if you have any math skills. Senator Obama said nothing about the median household income slipping because of the loss in value of the dollar---he said that the median household income slipped under Bush. Explain to me how President Bush was directly responsible for this? He has little or no control over the value of the dollar.... Congress (controlled by the Democrats) has much more responsibilty in this area than does the President....

Or..... as a tree-hugging liberal.... isn't it more convenient to blame someone else? "

A small but important topic in McSames speech was the funding of charter schools. Charters schools are great centers of learning but they require tuition and can only be afforded by the wealthy or upper middle class. To give these people a break in tuition will take funds from the public schools and those who can't afford to send their children to charter schools will get either a poorer education for their children or higher school taxes for public schools.
Also McSame is playing the POW card real hard. No one could fault Obama for using the race card as it is no different than McSames use of the POW card.
He speaks of being a maverick but the front row is full of his buddies the lobbyists.
He speaks of change but what will be different? He won't change our position in the Iraq War. He won't change the distribution of wealth in the country. He claims to want to co-operate across the aisle but uses his VP as an attack dog to bite the liberals in the butt. If Sarah Palin was a democrat she wouldn't have the political views that we detest or she would have been run out of the party. If she called herself a democrat that would be her right but I wouldn't support her views. "

Second, what factcheck.org did not bother to bring up, is the fact that under Bush the value of the dollar has plummeted to all-time lows. Ever notice your dollar buys A LOT LESS these days? Considering this, Obama was right, and may have been understating the case. "

That said, Karl can say as much as he wants, as it is usually more substantive than many other puff-pastry posters -- if he could control his impulse to sink to the level of useless retaliatory come-backs and name-calling (and sometimes not retaliatory) -- I'd defend him in EVERY case, even when I disagree with him.

Meanwhile, Palin is as whacked as McCain, just in different ways. His campaign thought it would be good strategically to pick a woman (or minority) and one who seemed to have a reputation as a reformer, so she got the call, despite the incredible lack of experience (makes Obama look like an old hand!) -- big mistake on their part, as she is more liability than plus -- thank goodness! Speaking ability, be it Obama or Palin, does not equal substance, much less substance of a GOOD kind.

(for those not familiar with the above websites, I advise you to check them out. They'll speak for themselves)

I generally go to Factcheck.org, it skewers both sides for stretching the truth.

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_obama.html

Obama: Now, many of these plans will cost money, which is why I’ve laid out how I’ll pay for every dime – by closing corporate loopholes and tax havens that don’t help America grow.

This is misleading. Even by his own campaign’s estimates, closing corporate loopholes and tax havens won’t pay for all of Obama’s new plans. In July, the campaign told the Los Angeles Times that they estimate the yearly cost of their proposed tax cuts at $130 billion. They put revenue from closing tax loopholes at just $80 billion. Obama also proposes to raise taxes to pre-Bush levels for families earning more than $250,000 a year and singles making more than $200,000, yielding additional revenue. But he didn't mention that in his speech.

But Obama’s claim is misleading on another level. According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, "without substantial cuts in government spending" Obama’s plan – and McCain's, too – "would substantially increase the national debt over the next ten years." Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor told FactCheck.org that the Tax Policy Center's analysis "fails to take in account Senator Obama's spending cuts, including ending the Iraq war." That's true, but Obama's proposed cuts are dwarfed by the Tax Policy Center's projected deficits. Obama’s new spending programs might be completely offset by new revenue and spending cuts. But overall spending will still exceed overall revenue, and the nation would face at least 10 more years of annual deficits.

Obama also pulled some sleight of hand when he stated that "the average American family" saw its income "go down $2,000" under George Bush. That's not correct. Census figures show average family income went down $348.

As it turns out, when Obama said "average family income," he didn't mean "average," and he didn't mean "family," either. An Obama aide says he was really referring to median income – which is the midpoint – and not to the average. And Obama was talking only about "working families," not retired couples.

For all families, median family income actually inched up under Bush by $272.

I'll not bore you with the rest of the article, but it refutes much of what Karl posted.

We all know both sides are going to stretch the truth or give half truths about the other side. It is politics... "

From Obama's speech, available at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/28/barack-obama-democratic-c_n_122224.html

"Change means a tax code that doesn't reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.

Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.

I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow.

I will cut taxes - cut taxes - for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.

And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.
....As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power.
....I'll invest in early childhood education. I'll recruit an army of new teachers, and pay them higher salaries and give them more support. And in exchange, I'll ask for higher standards and more accountability. And we will keep our promise to every young American - if you commit to serving your community or your country, we will make sure you can afford a college education.

Now is the time to finally keep the promise of affordable, accessible health care for every single American. If you have health care, my plan will lower your premiums. If you don't, you'll be able to get the same kind of coverage that members of Congress give themselves. And as someone who watched my mother argue with insurance companies while she lay in bed dying of cancer, I will make certain those companies stop discriminating against those who are sick and need care the most.
....Now is the time to change our bankruptcy laws, so that your pensions are protected ahead of CEO bonuses; and the time to protect Social Security for future generations.
...Now, many of these plans will cost money, which is why I've laid out how I'll pay for every dime - by closing corporate loopholes and tax havens that don't help America grow.
...We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers.
I'm sure McCain's speech will pander right to the NeoCon/Big Business interests in the Party, rather than the American people. It's scary how McCain and Palin can look right in the camera and lie to the voters and the American people about "Country First" It SHOULD scare you, and any voter. "

1Then it came to pass in the Land of Entitlement that the Word became Change and the Change became Hope and the Hope became Change You Can Believe In. 2And The Obamessisah went about all fifty-seven states, teaching at their Caucuses and Primaries, healing malaise among the poor in spirit, and preaching the gospel of Progress. 3Then His fame went throughout all the land; and they came to Him all people who were afflicted with Bush Derangement; and those who were hopenitized; moonbats and troofers; and He wooed them. 4Great multitudes followed Him - from Chicago to Jersey, and beyond the Hills of Beverly.
~

5And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain and stepped into the floodlights where they had built for Him a temple, and His disciples gathered around Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
6"Blessed are the poor,
For theirs is the kingdom of State expropriated wealth.
7Blessed are the jobless,
For the taxpayers shall be their keepers.
8Blessed are those who lost their homes,
For they shall inherit a bailout.
9Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for Change™,
For they shall be filled with a great taxpayer-funded feast.
10Blessed are all who have grievances,
For they shall be compensated through civil rights lawsuits.
11Blessed are the peace protesters,
For theirs is the Progressive World of Next Tuesday™.
12Blessed are those one illness away from disaster,

KARL STATES: an Atheist would NEVER force people to adopt "atheist" practices--because atheists know all too well how hypocritical and what a slippery slope that is! "

MEANING: 'the GROUP' simply slams/insults/belittles anyone NOT of their ways of thought!

AJ: keeping buckets of urine in your attic so you can haul it down 3 flights of stairs for daily removal???
I don't think so!

PS KARL: I keep an 'address book' for websites and passwords. "

Your twisted logic at work again?

BTW, I am no fan of Biden's, for the record. "

" AJ AJ AJ---just like I figured you'd respond--with emotions rather than with facts. Its easier to throw daggers (or throwing knifes and 5 gal buckets of urine) than it is to back up your insults with facts. Mad that your candidate is now up against a competetive woman? Accusing CVN of stealing his remarks.......grow up, and admit that most of the crap you spew is baseless, and full of your frail little ego. "

Wow Chris, you're so full of originality aren't you?

"By the way", which site did you steal that one from?

Was it the Washington Post blog? Or one of the right wing Nazi blogs you regularly visit?

Very clever, but you don't fool me. My guess is 80% of your posts, minimum, are plagiarized. That's the cool thing about Google. You really should either put things in YOUR own words, or give attribution in the form of a link at the very least. We understand that you have a small brain and aren't capable of your own thoughts, but at least show some respect for the writers you copy. "

" Covenent House in Alaska is moving and expanding and $22 million is needed to complete the expansion. Covenant House asked the Alaska legislature to provide $10 million, the legislature answered with $5 million in the 2009 budget. Governor Palin cut the figure back to $3.9 million -- for this year.
So, a one-time infusion of $3.9 million added by the state on top of normal operating expenses a "cut" only makes sense if you can't do math, if you don't understand the difference between a capital outlay and an operating outlay, or if you hate Republicans.
