Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To the start of a new school year.
Children's education can shape their future and inspire them to greatness, and there are some excellent teachers in our area that work hard to make sure our children receive the best education possible.

And, of course, parents need to play a role in their children's future. Whether it's reading stories at bedtime, helping with homework or visiting colleges, a child's success is directly impacted by their parents.

MISS: Well, it had to end sometime. For the first time since the 2001 season, the Auburn Doubledays will not be participating in the New York-Penn League playoffs.

Despite the streak ending, Auburn fans were still treated to winning baseball this past season under the guidance of manager Dennis Holmberg.

Doubledays fans have to admit they were spoiled as their team made the playoffs six straight times and won the city's first solo championship in 34 years last season (they shared the title with Oneonta in 1998).

Syracuse Chiefs fans, another Toronto Blue Jays affiliate, haven't tasted the playoffs since 1998; maybe that's why the team is looking for a new parent club.

But for Auburn, the move to dump the Astros for the Blue Jays in 2000 has worked out well.

HIT: To the TomatoFest, which takes place this weekend.

It's become a central New York tradition and a weekend of fun that helps feed the hungry in our area.

It takes many hours of work by numerous volunteers to put on TomatoFest and their efforts are appreciated by the people who enjoy the fruits of their labor this weekend and the ones that will benefit from it in the future.
