Auburn's first singles player easily defeated Nottingham's Angela Sponsler 6-0, 6-1 as the Maroons girls tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory Thursday.
Jenna Bruno won second singles 6-2, 6-1 against Ashley Barclay and Palak Patel won third singles 6-1, 6-2, topping Katharina Stein.
Sam Bruno and Jaime Bruno won first doubles, 6-3, 6-0, and the Maroons' Katie Searing and Aiswarya Irri took second doubles, 6-1, 6-0, defeating China Agnew and Veronica Lewis.
Kara Mariano and Hanora Barron won third doubles for the Maroons, 6-2, 6-1, while Amy Marinelli and Sam Cadwallader won fourth doubles, 6-0, 6-1.
“The girls played really strong,” Auburn head coach Shelly Connors said. “I knew that Claire was going to come out strong in singles but this is the first time we have been doubles strong. It was a really great match.”
Auburn senior Christina Simmons won fourth singles, 6-4, 6-1, in exhibition play.
The Maroons (2-0) host Central Square Monday.
“It is good to have those two wins under our belt before we play Central Square,” Connors said. “It gives the girls confidence because we know that Central Square is a tough team. It all depends on their lineup but we have a strong team this season.
