Four-day school week in everyone's best interest

Thursday, September 4, 2008 11:52 PM EDT

I would like to share my thoughts on school going to a four-day week. I strongly agree that not only parents, but everyone will benefit from this change.
Energy cuts and savings on fuel mean a lot to people. A three-day weekend would be very nice for families to spend more time together. What student wouldn't want a three-day weekend! I believe even the adults would love it.

Yes, it would mean longer days, but we should ask ourselves in an effort for our families and schools to save money, should schools switch to a four day week?

My kids are students in the Auburn Enlarged City School District. I wonder if the Auburn Enlarged City School District has an interest in the four-day school week and if they have even discussed it with parents. Schools would benefit from the change. Every little bit adds up. That is why we should try to do what is in everyone's best interest. Saving is what we all would like to do and that is why we should all think about this.

" The point is not whether a 4-day would be beneficial to YOU, or the District or whatever, it's whether it would be beneficial to THE CHILDREN. It absolutely would not; it would be detrimental to children, their education and their development.

The fact that it would also be a hardship for many parents is important, but secondary to the fact of the detriment it would cause children as learners. "

" I like the idea of a four day work week, but I think kids should be in school six days a week "

" Think about the impact a four day week would have on extra-curricular activities. If this is important to your children, how would it impact their participation when other schools are competing on a five day schedule? If students had to come into school for practices, or events...you would still have to heat the buildings. Unless a uniform change were to happen, I would have serious reservations. "

" The only way a 4 day school week would be beneficial to me is if we had 4 day work weeks. I think day care is expensive enough for after school care. It really isn't all that beneficial. Unless of course, you want to pay for my childs day care. "

" It is NOT in the best interests of the children, as a longer school day is not pedagogically sound nor based on what we know of child development.

Children are not born with the ability to focus on the same thing for long periods of time, nor the endurance to keep going at work for so many hours. Pushing them into this unnatural and more difficult kind of schedule will be a recipe for more failures and a downward spiral in the number of drop-outs and kids who just plain hate school.

It doesn't help working parents either.

A four day school week is one of the stupidest ideas in education I have heard yet. "

" agree irritated!
plus how many lights, a/c or heat, computers, are left on even when no one is there?

dan w is correct too about childcare!

however if you need a sitter, I have a really great sis who doesnt have kids but loves kids, and she could use the extra money. "

" The part that makes no sense to me is how are we saving anything on energy when in order to go to a 4 day week those days have to be longer to make up for the 5th day. If those days are longer to make up for the 5th day then are we not using the same amount of energy just in longer 4 day weeks as we would in a regular 5 day week? "

" You must work for the school district. Or a stay at home Mom.Most parents that work have a 5 day work week. It would be an added expense for child care "
