ADAMS CENTER - One woman was killed and another hospitalized with serious burns after fire engulfed their northern New York home.
Meanwhile, authorities were investigating a suspicious fire in Franklin County that left a man dead.
Fire officials had not yet released the name of the victim in the fire in Adams Center, a Jefferson County community about 70 miles north of Syracuse.
An autopsy was planned later Thursday.
Another woman, said to be in her 40s, was badly burned and was taken to University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was in critical condition.
The fire started about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the two-story duplex in Adams Center. Officials said four other occupants escaped the burning building.
Investigators said they weren't sure where or how the fire started. They said it spread quickly and a couple of firefighters had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
In Franklin County, authorities said they will likely need dental records to identify the charred body of a man in his early 40s who died in a house fire in Hogansburg early Wednesday morning.
An autopsy Wednesday night at Canton-Potsdam Hospital could not determine a cause of death. Toxicology and blood tests were pending.
District Attorney Derek Champagne said authorities were investigating whether the fire was intentionally set, saying there were “several things that cause concern.” He declined to elaborate.
