Remember to be courteous to handicapped people

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 12:03 AM EDT

I'm writing this letter to hopefully help people understand a bit more about handicapped people. I went to the state fair on Aug. 25 and due to my failing health I had to be in a wheelchair. What a difference that made during the shows. You couldn't get close enough to see them. People would not let you in. I don't mean up front, but at least where there was some view.
When I went into the buildings, again no way to get to the front of the exhibit to even buy anything. Trying to get in and out of the buildings, people pushed around you and walked in front of you.

I also wish that grocery stores could have a handicapped aisle so that you don't have to interrupt the store personnel as sometimes they get snippy. I haven't experienced all there is in a wheelchair, but what I have has opened my eyes a lot.

So next time you see a wheelchair, take a moment to remember it's easier for you to get access to things, and just stop and offer a helping hand.

I hope it helps people to take a minute and think. I don't believe that anyone can understand fully until you've been there.

" Karl, and AJ--I am sorry for offending you. I promise to be more courteous in the future. "

" Having been on both sides of a wheelchair myself (spent a couple months in one after I shattered my leg, but have also assisted a friend with a degenerative muscle disease get around in public in his wheelchair), I have to agree. It's improving, but the world is still full of road blocks for people who have mobility problems or other physical disabilities. "

" People need to be more courteous to all in a wheelchair or not! I take a blind friend shopping even with her cane, people still cut right in front of her and give dirty looks if she hits them with her cane... HELLO she is blind!! I have very little faith in the general public anymore... very sad! "

" In Massachusetts it is required that a percentage of checkouts must be handicapped accessible. That means a wider lane for a chair to get through and a portion of counter that is lower than a normal checkout. Also if they need help putting merchandise on the conveyor the store must help. Also the store provides special carts to use with a wheel chair.
On the other hand I have seen bullying from people in wheelchairs. I have worked in retail for many years and at times we have to redo an aisle of products and the aisle becomes blocked even though we try to minimize this happening. When a person with a wheelchair comes to that section I will offer to get them whatever they would like to see but the aisle is too narrow at this moment for them to get through. They will raise a big fuss and tell us we are in violation of the ADA act and demand we move everything so they can get through. We are not in violation of the ADA as we are only temporarily revamping a section of the store and offered to assist them in accessing the merchandise. So people can be rude on both sides.
I hate to say it but a person in a wheelchair sometimes must get aggressive and just hit a few rude idiots in the heels if they don't get out of the way. Sometimes you can't be subtle with some people. "
