SENECA FALLS -- Local and state officials who want New York state to collect sales tax on cigarettes sold at Native American businesses are rallying today in Seneca Falls.
The group -- which includes local lawmakers and state officials from Seneca and Cayuga counties -- believe it is "long overdue" for Gov. David Paterson to enforce the law.
Republican State Sen. Michael Nozzolio says those collections could produce $400 million a year in new revenue for the state, while making it more fair for non-Indian businesses that must pay taxes.
Similar legislation passed in 2005 was never implemented after a state court issued an injunction because the state taxation and finance department failed to create a coupon system for Indians to obtain tax refunds -- as is their legal right.
