WEEDSPORT - The final show of 2008 took place at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway Sunday until Super DIRT Week kicks off in October. When the final checkers flew, Alan Johnson and Billy Decker took a pair of Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series 54-Lap events.
Other winners on the night were Steve Gray (DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds) and Nate Peckham (UMP Street Stocks). By the end of the night Track Champions were also crowned - Alan Johnson (DIRTcar Modifieds), Jeremy Pitcher (DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds) and Nick Rizzo (UMP Street Stocks).
Frankie Caprara blasted from his front row starting spot to take early command of the first 54-Lap Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series Main race.
By lap 5, Caprara and Gary Tomkins pulled away to wage a battle for the lead. Some distance back, Justin Haers, Billy Dunn and Jimmy Phelps battled for top-five spots.
With 10 laps in the books, Tomkins closed the distance on Caprara running on his back bumper as they started to reel in the back of the field. Haers ran unchallenged in third with Phelps and Alan Johnson running each other hard for fourth and fifth.
With Caprara mired in heavy lapped traffic, Tomkins closed the gap and challenged for the lead.
Just before the halfway mark, Caprara and Tomkins cleared lapped traffic as Johnson started making his move towards the front while Haers and Phelps still remained within striking distance.
The first yellow of the race occurred on lap 38 for a slowing Tony Steiner.
On the restart, Johnson disposed of Tomkins and two laps later, took command of the race.
After taking the lead, Johnson ran the extreme bottom inches from the inside and drove away for the win. Caprara, Dale Planck, Tomkins and Jimmy Phelps rounded out the top five.
“I was concerned early on when the guys out front were kind of gone, I didn't figure we'd ever catch them,” Johnson said. “I have to thank Jake Spraker and Eric Kingsley for putting this deal together, it's a heck of a ride. “We'll do a few more races together. I don't know how many of them, as many as I can get Jake to do we'll do.”
Matt Sheppard and Justin Haers led the field down to starter Dave Farney's green flag in race No. 2 with Haers gaining the early advantage over Sheppard.
By lap 5, Haers held a narrow advantage over Sheppard and Gary Tomkins as they looked for a way around the leader. Billy Decker and Jeff Brownell ran a few car lengths back in fourth and fifth.
At lap 10, Haers and Sheppard ran side by side with Haers, leading by a half a hood going under the start finish line. Two laps later Sheppard was able to drive under Haers to take the lead just before a yellow flag for Ryan Bartlett.
On the restart, Billy Decker made the move of the race, using the extreme outside to blast from fourth to second place. Two laps later Decker went by Sheppard to take command of the race.
At the checkered flag, Decker grabbed a narrow victory over Tomkins. Dale Planck and Matt Sheppard rounded out the top five. With his fifth-place finish, Johnson was crowned the 2008 Cayuga County Fair Speedway Modified Track Champion.
