HIT: To the latest exhibit at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn.
“Highways & Byways: American Road Culture” features works of 18 artists from around the country that all incorporate roadside landscapes. The exhibit, which opened last weekend, runs for the next two months.
The Schweinfurth continues to bring unique galleries into its Genesee Street facility year after year, which is a great cultural service for the community.
MISS: To the pending closure of the Steve & Barry's clothing store at the Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius.
The discount apparel chain is drastically downsizing as part of a turnaround effort that has included the sale of the company. And while the store shutdowns are largely fueled by the national business climate, it's not a good sign that the store here made the list for closings.
Steve & Barry's is looking to keep open its best-performing stores only, and clearly the mall location is not one of them.
It's going to be tough for mall officials to replace this fairly significant tenant, especially in a weakened economy.
HIT: To some needed good economic news, which comes with the reported progress on bringing a kosher cheese factory to Cayuga County.
It's taking some extra time to get a bunch of municipal entities together on a deal for this project, but local leaders and, most importantly, Saratoga Cheese Corp. officials say they're pleased with the efforts all stakeholders are making at this point.
Of course we're still a long way from the finish line, so we urge local officials to press hard to move things along because bringing a new employer that would create 70 jobs and sell $100 million in products would be a giant victory.
HIT: To a fine run for the New York State Fair, held just down the road in Onondaga County.
The fair is a unique attraction for all of central New York, so each year is worth cherishing. But it's especially nice to have years like this one, when the weather is extremely cooperative.
