Re: CCC asks for more money
It appears that in this year of “bailouts,” Cayuga Community College has jumped on the bandwagon.
According to CCC President Dr. Daniel Larson, “We need to ask that the county increase its allocation because they haven't done it in a couple of years now.”
Now that's one hell of a non-compelling reason, if you ask me! And I'm sure the county will just jump on this rock solid rationale and write him a check ASAP.
And to have the audacity to come up with this ridiculous verbalization and not provide the county legislators with a breakdown of where all these budgeted dollars are going, appears to be a “little” on the arrogant side - no?
Granted, the increase of $107,000 (4 percent) isn't that great but again, the reasoning behind this request?
Also, don't they know that we're in a recession and the county is planning on raising our taxes again - and this is without this $107,000? What? Them worry?
Additionally, the college has a $559,041 fund balance or “money for a rainy day account” from which to get this $107,000 without jeopardizing its fiscal stability.
Or since this $107,000 represents less than 1/2 percent of the college's budget, why not just have every department cut their requests by a measly 1/2 percent?
We're quite confident that there is much more wiggle room - aka fat - in this CCC budget than just $107,000.
Most likely the department heads, etc. have close to or more than $107,000 in this budget by just rounding up their requests to the nearest hundred or thousand dollar amount.
Really? They do that?
Oh, be still my heart!
Or they could take 1/2 percent of the $107,000 out of their fund balance and take the other half out of their budget requests.
If they do any of the above, no one gets hurt: Not the college; not the county taxpayers; and not the 1,177 students.
Case solved. And no one left bloody.
Like the Nike commercial says: Just do it!
Unfortunately, they did neither, because on Tuesday the county caved in and approved a 3 percent increase instead.
It's your money.

Do a little research next time before you complain in another opinion letter. All colleges under the SUNY umbrella are required to keep a fund balance. It isn't something that can be tapped into as you suggest. One would think that you could use your head and understand that the college is a vital asset to the community and yes at times the college will need an increase in funding from the county. Dr. Larson made other strong arguements as to why the college needed funding so perhaps you could go back and cite some more examples. You and Jerry Morgan are quite comical. You both take everything so personal! "
