With just 7:21 left in overtime, Moravia 10th grader Hannah Mackey broke through the Weedsport's brick wall defense and snuck a shot by goalie Kaitlin Hammersley to give Moravia the tournament title, 1-0.
Mackey also took home the tournament's MVP trophy.
“It is awesome,” Mackey said. “It is a really good feeling. It was a tough game; it was really exciting to score that goal.”
In the consolation game, Southern Springs struck first, but Auburn scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-1 win to finish in third place. Kristin Coppola scored twice, while Katie Lupo, Abby Valentino and Kristin Cunningham each scored once. Sarah Reese recorded two saves in the net. For Southern Springs, Molly Clifford scored in the first half, while Amanda Stone recorded 17 saves.
Moravia secured their spot in the title game with a 3-0 victory Friday against Southern Springs, while Weedsport defeated Auburn in triple overtime to advance.
“We played really well as a team yesterday,” Moravia coach Doug Langtry, said. “Once we started picking it up today I think we were able to play well as a team too.”
Throughout the two 30-minute halves of the championship game, Weedsport and Moravia held each other in check.
While both teams were able to get some solid shots on goal, neither was able to find the back of the net.
“It was kind of a frustrating game,” said Moravia co-captain Haley Potter. “We weren't playing as well today as we were yesterday, but I think we were able to pick it up a little bit and get the job done, that was great.” And Moravia definitely had motivation to pick things up.
Going up against last year's tournament champions, Moravia knew they had a tough challenge ahead of them.
“(Weedsport) beat us last year,” said Moravia co-captain Jen McLean. “I think they beat us 2-1. This year we really wanted to beat them. It was an amazing game and an awesome game for us to win.”
The Moravia girls also admitted they had another factor driving them - not the thrill of victory, not the right to say they were champions, not even the trophy, but rather the tournament T-shirts that went to the winning team.
This year they were pink and blue tie-dyed shirts.
“We really wanted to get those T-shirts,” Potter said. “That was a big motivation for us, we really wanted to win those shirts this year and we did.”
Langtry said Weedsport gave Moravia a good game and that it was a hard-fought victory until the final score.
“They really brought it all together,” Langtry said of his squad. “They played well as a team and I think that really shows.”
Members of the All-Tournament Team include Moravia's McLean, Potter, Amanda Stone, Stephanie Hargett, Weedsport's Margaret Roberts, Allison Roosa, Hammersley, Amy Sanchez, Auburn's Kristen Cunningham, Brianna Handley, Katie Lupo, Southern Springs' Katie Smith, Emily Haff, Port Byron's Chasiti Wilcox and Cato-Meridian's Rebecca Myers.
