How does mixing the recyclables help anything?

Saturday, August 30, 2008 11:36 PM EDT

OK, so I may be a bit slow, however I guess I'm not the only one confused with regard to Auburn's recycling program.
When recycling was instituted here in Auburn, we were required to separate all items for recycling by material type, i.e.: glass/metal/plastic/newsprint/cardboard.

Recently, I have been informed quite informally, that glass/metal/plastic can all be thrown in together - somehow, this just doesn't compute!

My quandary is how are these totally dissimilar materials going to be recycled when all thrown in together, crushed in the garbage truck to become one mass of crushed and broken materials?

Does the city of Auburn have some magic machine that does the sorting of cycled materials?

If so, they'd better tell the world about it - might even save some of the multitude of trucks coming from New York City raising havoc with our streets and roadways.

Sure hope someone has an answer to this.

" It's sorted mostly by machinery and conveyor belts. Are you too stupid to realize the value of recycling? "

" Yeh, the stuff is sorted by workers making $25 an hr.. Must not have any other work to do! "

" I work for an apartment complex in Auburn and to add to this dismay many people are still going by the old schedule since it was altered the way you describe so some are still putting the wrong items out resulting in no pickup. You'd think the city would do a better job of informing residents. So anyways the result is that the wrong items end up in the regular dumpster.Who changes this policy halfway thru the year without proper informing? " They are sorted at a transfer station. It's not rocket science. "
