NEW YORK - It was a close race, but in the end the curly-haired poodle beat out the soft and silky wheaten terrier in a survey for the most suitable breed for the family of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
The American Kennel Club said Thursday 42,000 people cast their vote during the seven-week survey to choose a family dog for the Obamas.
The kennel club says it embarked on the survey after reports that Obama promised his two young daughters, Malia and Sasha, a dog - whether or not he makes it to the White House.
The AKC says “the poodle won by a (dog) hair, with just a few hundred votes separating the top two contenders.”
It would be the first dog for the Obama family. Obama's Republican rival, John McCain, owns four dogs.
