As a kid who was raised here and in southern Cayuga County, I was thrilled that Auburn's extraordinary history was back on center stage during Sen. Hillary Clinton's moving speech at the Democratic National Convention.

It is sometimes easy to forget that this incredibly beautiful place has long been at the center of so many movements that continue to transform the social and political landscape.

Harriet Tubman's story is certainly a big part of our history but there are many more stories that are important and need to be told over and over again.

Whether you are liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, pro-choice or pro-life, the water in the Finger Lakes breeds activism, debate, experimentation and healthy skepticism about simple answers to complex issues.

When I return home, I am always reminded that my contemporaries - notably Guy Cosentino and Dan Fessenden - have kept alive the tradition of thoughtful debate and are passionate advocates for the community.

After living in New York City for many years, I don't profess to be well-versed in the local issues that confront you when you make choices in the upcoming elections but I hope that all of us take the time to discuss those issues and vote with our heads and our hearts.
