Auburn Doubledays outfielder Bartolo Nicolas belted his first home run of the season, but it wasn't enough to propel his team to a win on Wednesday. Williamsport scored five runs in the first three innings en route to an 8-2 win that resulted in a split two-game series for both teams.
New York-Penn League All-star pitcher Castillo Perez suffered his fifth loss of the season, which dropped him below .500. Perez was touched for seven of the Crosscutters 10 hits, two walks and all five early runs in just four innings of work. Tyler Cloyd earned his fifth win of the season, after seven spectacular frames on the mound for the Crosscutters. Cloyd was tagged with giving up both Auburn runs, but fanned eight batters and walked no one in the process.
Catcher Joel Collins resumed his hot streak for the Doubledays, knocking in Mike McDade on an RBI double in the fourth inning. Nicolas blasted a solo shot in the sixth.
Auburn (32-33) falls back below .500 in the season and remains 8.5 games back of Jamestown for the Pinckney Division lead. The Doubledays head to Jamestown today.
