This week, we spotlight manager of August Moon Spa Todd Hover.
Q: What is the most rewarding thing about what you do?
A: I think being able to work with all the other massage therapists on a daily basis, and watching them grow and expand.
Q: What is the biggest challenge?
A: Micromanaging. The daily things like scheduled changes and agendas. You can easily be dragged off into another direction.
Q: How did you get into this field?
A: I was a hairdresser for over 28 years, and then in 2005 I went to massage school. The opportunity came along, and being as I had been a business owner for many years and I wanted to continue with health and wellness, it was just kind of the next step.
Q: What is the best advice that you have for
people who want to stay healthy?
A: First of all, getting in a really good diet. Not thinking about going on a diet, but thinking about eating healthy to stay healthy. We always push lots of water, and we do a lot of stress relieving.
Q: Is stress a big reason people seek a massage therapist?
A: Oh yes, definitely. They come for relaxation.
Q: How important is being relaxed and stress free as far as a person's overall health?
A: It is very important. People don't realize what stress can do to your body. We always talk about how food is bad for us, but stress is right up there, and it can cause a lot of damage. Being able to let go of things is very important because people don't realize that we hold on to a lot in our muscles. It is always good to just kind of get them moving and to keep everything flowing.
Q: What is the biggest misconception people have about the field?
A: Some people think they are not going to enjoy it. They get more nervous about what to wear. Many of them are a little apprehensive, but once they realize how they feel afterwards, they get hooked on it. It definitely helps you carry on and de-stress regularly.
Q: Do you have an unhealthy vice?
A: I have a weakness for soda, popcorn and going to the movies.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the Finger Lakes region?
A: The seasons change. I love the fact that there are a lot of different cultures. You have everything all in one area. And it is just beautiful.
