Instead of the people boycotting "Tropic Thunder" for the use of the mentally challenged, they would be better off boycotting it for the language, which is downright uncalled for.
I wonder why you hear Skaneateles, Aurora and Owasco complain about truck traffic but you really don't hear too many people talk about it in downtown Auburn, especially North and South Street. You wonder why downtown is the way it is, it has become a horrible problem and I don't hear enough people in Auburn complain about it, especially the officials.
Could it be that alternate side parking makes it easier for the garbage trucks to roar through town?
I think the City of Auburn might as well pull up all of the stop signs in the city, as there are people who just don't understand what the word stop means. Mostly down there on the corner of North Division and Clark Street/the Arterial --- that's a very bad place; up on the corner of Clymer and Dunning Avenue is another place; and over on the corner of Thornton Ave. and Chapman Ave., that's another place.
Wonder why the state is broke? One reason is the outrageous pensions that school superintendents set themselves up for; case in point, Plume collects over $95,000 per year.

You, DD, are the one baffled by the facts. You prefer the rather strange science which dictates that physics laws were not working that day, and basic longstanding engineering principles suddenly and mysteriously stopped working as well.
In any event, your long pilfer from your physics book does not explain away the numerous and unquestionable anomalies, a few of which I have pointed out here. The only things that can are controlled demolition or specialized energy weapons. Since there is solid evidence of thermate, I'm leaning toward the former. "

I BELIEVE IT MORE THAN EVER.

And again, the fires were not very hot, as indicated by the woman standing at one of the openings, all of the black smoke (an indication of a poorly burning low temperature, oxygen-starved fire), or the firefighter who indicated two hoses could have easily knocked down the fires on one of the floors. These are just a few examples off the top of my head. The steel was nowhere near melting or seriously weakening when the buildings collapsed. The structures were massive heat sinks. How do you account for the near free fall speed of the 3 towers with no resistance, especially considering the massive cores? How is it that everything but the steel was pulverized into fine dust? How would your physics book explain that away?
google "laws of physics" +wtc
Oh yeah, al CIA da, those mischievous old cave dwellers, were really top notch engineers huh? Pullleeeze get real!!. "
dd wrote on Aug 23, 2008 3:50 PM:
If it were purely a matter of temperature, then as soon as a fire reaches its maximum temperature, the buildings would have collapsed in seconds.
But it didn't take seconds, did it? It took nearly an hour before the first building fell. Why is that?
Because the problem isn't one of temperature, it is one of HEAT CAPACITY and THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY.
"Heat capacity is a measurable physical quantity that characterizes the ability of a body to store heat as it changes in temperature. It is defined as the rate of change of temperature as heat is added to a body at the given conditions and state of the body (foremost its temperature). In the International System of Units, heat capacity is expressed in units of joules per kelvin. It is termed an "extensive quantity" because it is sensitive to the size of the object (for example, a bathtub of water has a greater heat capacity than a cup of water). Dividing heat capacity by the body's mass yields a specific heat capacity (also called more properly "mass-specific heat capacity" or more loosely "specific heat"), which is an "intensive quantity," meaning it is no longer dependent on amount of material, and is now more dependent on the type of material, as well as the physical conditions of heating."
"In physics, thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat.
It is defined as the quantity of heat, Q, transmitted in time t through a thickness L, in a direction normal to a surface of area A, due to a temperature difference ΔT, under steady state conditions and when the heat transfer is dependent only on the temperature gradient.
Thermal conductivity = heat flow rate × distance / (area × temperature difference) "
So, the poroblem here is not strictly one of temperature, but how much heat was being pumped into the steel, versus how quickly it could conduct that heat to other areas to cool itself down. If the steel conducts heat away from the fire faster than it is being pumped into the steel, the steel remains rigid. If heat is pumped into the steel faster than it can be conducted away, the temperature of the steel RISES ABOVE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE FIRE, eventually reaching the plastic deformation (softening) temperature. At that point, the steel girders deform, and the rest is purely momemtum (mass times velocity).
The supporting girders did not need to melt (liquify) to cause the buildings to collapse, they just needed to soften enough to deform and start the collapse.
Have you every broken a spoon by bending it back and forth? Heat is also generated by movement--the molecular structure is altered in the spoon by A LITTLE HEAT, and is weakend to the point of breaking it in two with your fingers.
No explosives are required, no CIA or FBI involvement, no mysterious conspiracies from the Federal government, nothing. No one to sneak into a building overnight, plant thousands of explosives, and put everything back so no one knew they were there.
Al-Qaeda terrorists knew their engineering far better than any of you idiots out there, and used that knowledge to bring down the towers. They have admitted it. "

Longboard315, nice to have someone else here who can see through the bull. "I have over 35 years of fire research in my experience. I worked in the fire program at NIST for 19 years, leaving as a division chief. I have been at the University of Maryland since. I am a founding member and past-Chair of the International Association for Fire Safety Science—the principal world forum for fire research."
“In my opinion, the WTC investigation by NIST falls short of expectations by not definitively finding cause, by not sufficiently linking recommendations of specificity to cause, by not fully invoking all of their authority to seek facts in the investigation, and by the guidance of government lawyers to deter rather than develop fact finding."
Alan Miller reports:
"Dr. Quintiere made his plea during his presentation, 'Questions on the WTC Investigations' at the 2007 World Fire Safety Conference. 'I wish that there would be a peer review of this,' he said, referring to the NIST investigation. 'I think all the records that NIST has assembled should be archived. I would really like to see someone else take a look at what they’ve done; both structurally and from a fire point of view.'”
“'I think the official conclusion that NIST arrived at is questionable,' explained Dr. Quintiere. 'Let's look at real alternatives that might have been the cause of the collapse of the World Trade Towers and how that relates to the official cause and what's the significance of one cause versus another.'”
"'I hope to convince you to perhaps become 'Conspiracy Theorists', but in a proper way,' he said."

Check this out from Glenn Beck on CNN regarding the US cities that rank the poorest...
Detroit, whose mayor has been indicted on felony charges, hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961. Buffalo has been even more stubborn. It started putting a Democrat in office back in 1954, and it hasn't stopped since.
Unfortunately, those two cities may be alone at the top of the poverty rate list, but they're not alone in their love for Democrats. Cincinnati, Ohio (third on the poverty rate list), hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1984. Cleveland, Ohio (fourth on the list), has been led by a Democrat since 1989. St. Louis, Missouri (sixth), hasn't had a Republican since 1949, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (eighth), since 1908, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (ninth), since 1952 and Newark, New Jersey (10th), since 1907.

Things Republicans Believe
1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.
3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big Money but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve the pain of illness.
4. “Standing Tall for America” means firing your workers and moving their jobs to India.
5. A woman can’t be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
6. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.
7. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans’ benefits and combat pay.
8. Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless you run for governor of California as a Republican.
9. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won’t have sex.
10. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
11. HMOs and insurance companies have the interest of the public at heart.
12. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.
13. Global warming, and tobacco’s link to cancer, are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
14. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush’s daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a “we can’t find Bin Laden” diversion.
15. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.
16. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.
17. The public has a right to know about Hillary’s cattle trades, but George Bush’s driving record is none of our business.
18. You support states’ rights, which means (former) Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have a right to adopt.
19. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the ’80s is irrelevant.
20. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with
China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony. "

* You tell everyone who'll listen that Bush is "worse than Hitler" and that Republicans are fascists, but you never stop to consider that if that were true, you'd be dead or in a gulag already.
* You blame the oil companies for high gas prices, but believe in doing everything humanly possible to keep them from drilling for more oil.
* You'd have no problem with a Democratic President talking with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Kim Jung-Il without conditions, but would be very upset if he started seriously negotiating with Republicans over national security or energy issues.
* You don't see a conflict between "supporting the troops" and trying to insure that they lose the war that they're fighting.
* You believe that conservative criticism of Barack Obama's abilities is primarily driven by racism, but actual race-based criticism leveled at Clarence Thomas, Michelle Malkin, and Condi Rice by liberals obviously has nothing to do with race.
* You believe that fanatical Muslims who want to fly planes into our skyscrapers aren't a serious threat to the U.S., but Christians are.

I have pointed this out before and I'll continue to do so whenever we're on the topic and you still do not understand. Look at the top of the WTC leaning just before it disintegrated! If you don't believe your own eyes on this one, then you must believe in magic.

I wonder what the 9/11 troofers are going to do now? Of course they'll try and discredit the report by NIST's staff of engineers, both PEs and PHDs as some kind of Bush cover up.
I find it funny that the left calls President Bush dumb in one breath but then claim that he orchestrated the biggest cover-up of US history. "

"NIST WTC Lead Investigator Shyam Sunder. “Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that brought the building down.”
"The investigators also reported that if the city water main had not been cut by the collapse of World Trade Center towers 1 and 2 (WTC 1 and WTC 2), operating sprinklers in WTC 7 would likely have prevented its collapse."
This should put to rest the absurd conspiracy theories that spawned a cottage industry of freaks, weirdos, oddballs and other assorted human debris.

According to the 2008 military pay charts he would be getting
$6,307.80 per month plus any housing allowances and special duty pay.
If he were a junior officer, O-1 he would be getting $3,215.10 per month
In order for him to become a Colonel with three yrs service he would have to be in a very critical field. "

The National Guard is a dual state-Federal force and a reserve force for the U.S. Army. The Guard has fought in every war since the Civil War. For example: 40% of the U.S. combat divisions in France during WW 1, 75,000 Army and Air Guardsmen were called up for Desert Storm in 1991, and many more examples too numerous to list.

I have to go try to find the details on that fella who refused to fight in what he felt after searching his heart was an unconstitutional war -- I am pretty sure he HAD fought in other actions and was willing to do so again, so it wasn't that he signed up for the military then we unwilling to fight. He really believes the war in Iraq is unconstitutional and as such, to fight is against his conscience and his oath. I was just talking with a colleague yesterday about his time in the service -- he signed up right out of high school because he didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. He reminded me that when you join the military, you swear and oath to defend the Constitution -- not the interests of individual administrations, and certainly it would be against that oath to fight in an illegal war. There is that one fella in the service who refused to fight on exactly those grounds -- that this war violates the oath he took when he joined the service. Farmer's Gal wrote on Aug 20, 2008 7:48 AM:
Anywhere there is a higher concentration of people, there will be more pollution, because each person generates it. Some is obvious -- like sewage waste or trash, but people also generate noise pollution, and not just directly. Where there are more people, more goods are needed, and often, more goods are produced. Materials need to be carried to and from these sites, and waste is trucked away. All these things create noise pollution, as well as air pollution, oil/grease on the ground, and traffic/crowding. So, more people draw more polluting activities to them.
Population density in the countryside is considerably less, so there is not the excuse for traffic and noise pollution like there is in a more populated area. And without traffic lights and lower speed limits making it necessary for trucks to stop often and keep their speed down, they are often speeding dangerously in the countryside.
Those are just a couple reasons why you hear more complaints about them in the Skaneateles, Aurora and Owasco than in town.
Cities produce more waste, let cities deal more with their own waste, esp. when you are talking about NYC shipping its waste upstate, which is a large portion of the trash being hauled through tiny communities which neither created it nor are profiting for it in any way.
On the contrary -- these communities are burdened with non-local heavy traffic putting more wear and tear on their roads than they have funds to repair continuously, more noise pollution, more air pollution, more risk of spillage if there's an accident, more danger of accidents from speeding trucks, etc.
So, the small communities are taking a beating from trucks which are bringing them nothing of gain, nor taking away any of their trash. Let those trucks stay on the Thruway and other central arteries which were intended for that kind of traffic until they get to their destinations. "
