Cross country, running changes people's lives

Sunday, August 24, 2008 11:17 PM EDT

Three years ago I started running with my sister to help her train for modified cross country. Never did I realize the impact that running would have on our lives. I have watched track and cross country help both of my sisters in many ways. They have gotten to experience new friends, and new cities. Not to mention the memories that will last forever. They have even brought home a couple great awards.
Many people think that running only builds stamina or strength. Running grows far beyond that. The more serious I got about running, the more great people I met. We often would team up and make awareness events for sick children in our areas. Not only do you get in shape, you build relationships that last a lifetime. You get to experience new challenges and many times you have running friends to tackle them with you. I think what running has done for my family can be duplicated by anyone that has the heart and desire to rise above where they are. Recently our mother, who was a smoker for many years, started running as well and finished her first 5k event. These are feats that are conquered within and go way beyond winning medals or prizes.

I also want to take the time and thank the coaches of Auburn Track and Cross Country for their timeless commitment to the kids of the community. I am inspired to see Coach O'Conner and Coach Stowell, running with their kids on the roads each day.

A special thanks to Wayne Mason who hosts the annual Mason & Grant Labor Day Classic at Emerson Park. In a commitment to my sisters, I would like to see everyone come out and support the team. All proceeds go to Auburn Cross Country Program and help them take one step closer to their dreams. Registration is from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Emerson Park on Monday, Sept. 1.
