Auburn's alternate-side parking too confusing

Saturday, August 23, 2008 10:54 PM EDT

Contrary to the belief of city officials, there is confusion about the odd and even parking. It is contradictory. The “rule” is: park on the even side of the street on even days and the odd side of the street on odd days.
To me, a day is that portion of a 24 hour period that has the most daylight. However, the “day” of the parking does not begin until 6 p.m., almost dark. So, in reality, the “rule” really is: park on the odd side on even days. The examples given were for those who work all day and come home in the evening. Those who are gone to work all day don't need to worry about odd/even parking, only to remember to park on the opposite side when they come home in preparation for the next day, if they park on the street at all. Those who struggle with the concept are driving around Auburn during the day trying to remember which side of the street is even or odd, then reversing it in your head and parking the opposite way. That is confusing.

Either change the signs to read: Park even side on odd days and odd side on even days. or maybe do the common sense thing and actually make it “Even side even days.... etc.”

" Also, keep in mind that a lot of these houses were built before cars were around. Who needed a driveway back then??? "

" cheeko: it's a bit late for many homes in Auburn to just add a driveway--unless their neighbor doesn't mind the removal of his/her bedroom or kitchen!
At which, I think they would 100% OBJECT!
Personally I think the parking issue shouldnt be an issue, but I have traveled on some narrow roads in Auburn and I see why the city mandated parking.

It would be easier if some were wiser to where they park, rather than think they are the only ones in the city and dont care if they block others! "

" Driveways. Your Zoning and Planning Boards in the past has failed to insure that these building plans that were submitted in the past did not inclued DRIVEWAYS in the outlay. The board insures that proper sewage, electrical, and etc. are there BUT NO DRIVEWAYS. This is the problem plain and simple. "

" cheeko, take a look at some of the houses along the streets, and you will see that a LOT of them do not have adaquate room for a driveway, because the houses are so close together. Others are too close to the road. I would be nice if everyone did have one, but it's just not possible. "

" There are a lot of laws and ordinances that are on the book and are easily violated and rarely enforced, but honest people obey them because it is the right thing to do. If you are good and honest you will obey the law. Just because others are getting away with violating the law does not give you the right to disobey the law. The police dept would be busy all day enforcing every law and ordinance on the books and serious crimes would be running rampant. Many laws depend on the good and honest citizens obeying them because it is right to do. When the situation gets out of hand then call the police dept and ask them to enforce the law. The majority of people will obey the law without a threat of fine or arrest. "

" Driveways---one step futher. City Building Codes should insist and guarantee that ALL homes and rental properties have adequate parking space. You own your home---put the driveway in, build carports, YOU ARE CAUSING CAR RATES TO STAY HIGH from the damages being done from hit-and-runs. If you are a fisherman, as the saying goes---'get the kids off the streets amd on the creeks'. So to---get the cars off the streets so that the streets look neat. A play on words but you get the drift. "

" Cheeko- some of us do not have the luxury of having a driveway. Take a look around on some of the side streets-there are few driveways. I am sure if more of us HAD a driveway they would park in it. "

" Hello,---you are missing the parking issue at hand, CARS ARE MENT TO BE PARKED IN YOUR DRIVEWAYS, ROADS ARE MENT FOR TRAVEL. This my friend is the bottom basic, it is the modern law of convenience that you have problems with. "

" The only thing that's confusing is this idiotic letter. You come home from work, or school, or your afternoon appointment with your podiatrist, you park on the odd/even side of the street depending on what day it is. How hard is that? If it's the 6pm thing that's tripping you up, ya know what? Don't worry about it. The law is only enforced overnite the vast majority of the time, if it's even enforced at all.

Next up: A lesson on the right and wrong time to tie one's show laces "
