Cutters pile up 17 hits

AUBURN - It was a good first inning for the Auburn Doubledays.
Unfortunately, after Brian Van Kirk knocked an RBI single to score Chris Hopkins, it quickly slid downhill from there against Williamsport on Friday. The Crosscutters racked up 17 hits and handed the Doubledays their sixth straight loss, 9-1 at Falcon Park.

Every Williamsport player that stepped to the plate, including pinch hitter Joe Blackburn in the eighth inning, earned at least one hit. With the loss, Auburn falls to fourth place, behind the Crosscutters in the Pinckney Division and six games behind first-place Batavia.

New York-Penn League all-star Castillo Perez suffered his first loss in a month after a shaky 3 1-3 innings. He surrendered eight hits, five runs and walked one. After Perez, Jay Monti, Evan Crawford and Justin Cryer didn't fare a whole lot better, walking a combined six batters and allowing nine more hits.

On the other side, Tyler Cloyd earned his fourth win of the season, propelling him over the .500 mark. As one of just two pitchers in the game for the Crosscutters, Cloyd gave up three hits and three walks while striking out three, but his defense was flawless behind him. Auburn put up three defensive errors for the second straight night to add to a losing effort. Sean Grieve got the save after allowing just one baserunner in three innings.

Offensively, Auburn's woes continued. The Doubledays managed just four hits, two of them came in the first two innings and by just two batters - Van Kirk and second baseman Carlos Vasquez. Auburn stranded a runner in the first four frames, but after the first, it didn't send more than one batter to the bags in any inning.

For the Crosscutters, it was a complete team effort at the plate. Leadoff batter Arlon Quiroz earned three hits and two RBIs. While he was the only one with a hat trick in hits, Cody Overbeck, Jim Murphy, Troy Hanzawa, Scott Thomas and Doug Morales each had two.

Overbeck and Steve Susdorf both had two RBIs also.

After suffering its second consecutive sweep, Auburn (31-29) plays Jamestown tonight at Falcon Park.

Notes: All-star outfielder Chris Demons has been playing for AAA Syracuse this weekend. ...The Crosscutters turned two double plays, while Auburn had one. The Doubledays did turn an impressive heads-up play in the fifth when Thomas attempted to score from second on a Morales single. Bartolo Nicolas fielded the ball, threw it to shortstop Bryan Kervin, who hurled the ball to Chris House behind the plate. House tagged Thomas just in time to prevent a second run scored in the fifth inning. Williamsport scored twice in the sixth and once more in the ninth. ...Auburn was able to stranded two or more Crosscutter baserunners in four innings, with bases loaded situations in the final two frames.
