This camp is just one of 1,500 that Challenger Sports are running throughout the Uninted States and Canada for about 65,000 boys and girls of all ages.
The coaching staff teaches age appropriate soccer skills along with lessons on respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and leadership, discussing how these relate not only to the sport but also to other aspects of life such as family and school. Two of the coaches, Callum Murphy and Martin Cumberland, are currently in Moravia running a soccer fall clinic at Fillmore Glen State Park throughout the week.
“We have done 12 sessions this year,” Murphy said. “This is our last one for this year. There is no difference in the British soccer compared to American either. It's just the popularity that is different. It's our way of life in Europe.”
The clinic that Shannon Williams started five years ago as a project has had its share of success. She was called by one Challenger Sports who wanted her to host a clinic.
“I thought why not give it a shot,” Williams said. “If it worked great, but if not we wouldn't do it again.”
The first year, Williams was interested in the types of cultures she picked up from the coaches.
“It's funny to know that American football is the sport that has the greatest equivalence to soccer in the European countries,” Williams said. “They really passed their culture differences down to the children very well.”
