D-days to be represented in record numbers

The break might come at a perfect time for the Auburn Doubledays, but six of the team's players will not be getting a rest in today's New York-Penn League All-Star Game.
Three position players and three pitchers will represent the Doubledays at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy. Auburn is sending the most players of any team in the fourth annual game - three more than last season's championship team.

Power hitter Adam Amar was a shoo-in as an all-star. With a .337 batting average - which is third in the league - Amar has also amassed 65 hits (third), 15 doubles (t-third), nine home runs (t-fourth) and 36 RBIs. First baseman Mike McDade, who bats in front of Amar in the lineup, has brought another gigantic bat to the Doubledays this season. With a .292 average - after a recent slump - McDade has slammed two home runs, 20 RBIs and one triple amidst 40 hits after joining the team in early July. Leadoff batter Chris Demons' speed and outfield talent made him another easy selection. His 32 runs scored are the most on the team, and his 19 stolen bases are third best in the league.

On the mound, closer Bobby Bell has brought nothing but phenomenal things to the Doubledays bullpen and nothing but headaches for the rest of the league. His 1.07 ERA through 17 games makes him one of the best in the league, as does his three runs allowed through 25 1-3 innings. Starters Castillo Perez and Joel Carreno have been the two best starters for the Doubledays. In over 60 innings of work, Carreno has fanned 67 batters - the second most in the league. In nearly 58 innings of work, Perez has amassed a 4-3 record with a 2.81 ERA with 57 strikeouts. Combined, the two starters have walked just 35 batters this season - the best of all Doubledays starting pitchers.

The home run derby will begin at 6 p.m., and the game's first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Amar will compete in the derby.
