Each Monday, The Citizen features someone from the Finger Lakes community.
This week, we spotlight Thomas Crawford of The City.
Q. What is The City?
A. It is part of the concept store for Circuit City. We are making the stores smaller and changing some things around to save money and improve service. The City will teach customers how to use their new electronic equipment for free. We will offer special events and training seminars to any residents who want to learn more about the technology they are using.
Q. How does The City work?
A. When a customer buys a new camera, computer, GPS navigation system or other equipment, we will offer to give them a free tutorial before they leave. We will also offer free seminars. We are trying to do these on the weekends, but not a lot of people know about it yet. We also offer events for people and hand out small prizes. We just had a Wii Bowling event, which had a great turnout. The events are the only thing that may have a $5 fee, and half of that fee will go towards a charity.
Q. How did you get involved with The City?
A. My boss just asked me if I wanted to do it. We never had one set person to run it. I figured I like what it offered the community and it was something I could do.
Q. What other activities have you been involved with?
A. The program has had a lot of growth, and we are getting very involved in the surrounding communities. We have done the Relay for Life in Syracuse, we sponsored a hole for the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes Miniature Golf Tournament, and we are currently doing a drive for school supplies. I really like to do stuff like that. My family taught me to always give of myself, so I love getting the opportunity to volunteer myself through my position here.
Q. What are some ways you have attempted to promote The City, and what other plans do you have?
A. I met the Sick Puppies at K-Rockathon and they came into the store for a little bit to meet people. I really want to try to get a big celebrity in here and see what that does for the program. I think someone like John Walsh would be good, and he could do something on public safety.
