ELBRIDGE - Golfers on Saturday raised money for student scholarships at the Millstone Golf Course in Elbridge.
The inaugural Guad's Memorial Golf Tournament was created as a way to memorialize Aaron Guadagnolo, who was killed in a motorcycle accident May 14. The event was organized by a group of Aaron's friends as well as his colleagues from the fire department, said Aaron's girlfriend Malinda Chuff.
Although Aaron was not a big golfer, this was a good way to get everyone in the community together, said friend Carolyn Rolince.
"There was huge support from the community as far as donations," Rolince, of Camillus, said.
The tournament filled up almost immediately with 124 golfers signing up to play, she said.
Aaron was they type of person that got along with everybody, Chuff, of Weedsport, said. He enjoyed lacrosse, hunting and fishing and was also a member of the Jordan Fire Department.
"He would want to be remembered as laid back and a goofball," Chuff said.
The event will continue every year and proceeds will go toward the Jordan-Elbridge Dollars for Scholars Scholarship. Dollars for Scholars is a national financial aid fund and Jordan-Elbridge is affiliated with Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America. The fund raises money to support local students in pursuit of higher education.
Patrick Ely, a friend of the family, came out to the tournament because he's known Aaron and his family for many years.
The scholarship is given out every year and the winner is chosen by parents, said Ely, of Elbridge.
"He would do anything for his friends," Rolince said of Aaron. "It was a big loss for the whole community."
