Religious oaths no

more valid than any other
I have to admit I got a huge laugh out of Dale Bush's contention that the reason for the Sennett controversy regarding Bonca's restaurant is because “The ZBA has removed God from the town!” Bush alleges this imaginative reason because the word “God” is omitted at the end of the sworn oath in town court.

It might interest Dale to know that, in the case of Lord Lane C.J. in R. v. Kemble [1990] 91 Cr.App.R.178, guidance was given which states:

“We take the view that the question of whether the administration of an oath is lawful does not depend upon what may be the considerable intricacies of the particular religion which is adhered to by the witness. It concerns two matters and two matters only in our judgment. First of all, is the oath an oath which appears to the court to be binding on the conscience of the witness? And if so, secondly, and more importantly, is it an oath which the witness himself considers to be binding upon his conscience?”

In other words, the insertion or inclusion of “God/Allah/Buddha, etc, means absolutely nothing if the character of the individual taking the oath is of a deceitful or dishonest nature. Look at how many politicians take oaths with “God” in them, and who regularly just treat them as “lip service” or, for that matter, a “Men of God.”

Atheists are regularly sworn into court by solemn oaths which are no less binding than the more commonly known “Religious Oath.”

If we want to go truly “retro” in swearing Biblical-based oaths, lets go all the way back to the “Yarek Oath,” the placing of the hands on that particular part of a male anatomy “under my thigh” from which we get the word “testify.” (Genesis 24: 2-4, Genesis 47: 29)

I wonder if that would help Bonca's?

" I haven't witnessed Karl opposing religion but rather opposing those who push their beliefs on others who are not interested. He has stated his beliefs but I have never seen him try to convert anyone. You have a right to your beleifs but keep them to yourself. "

" Never happen Jerry; if you'd like to discuss it, I'm in the book, but this matter is closed here as far as I'm concerned.
Your idea is both naive and completely unrelated to the locus of this letter.
I would appreciate if you would attempt to stay on topic.
I do not consider myself "bogged down" in anything at all--just calling a spade a spade, a ridiculous contention a ridiculous contention. "

" I never said anything negative about your job Karl. My point is you are a celebrity, you have a status in the music world, you could use your influence in a more positive manner than getting bogged down in anti God rhetoric. Expression of personal beliefs in your business or any business for that matter will do nothing to enhance your income. In fact it will alienate some who would otherwise be an advocate.
I was trying to convey a positive way you could use your status as a local celebrity. The building that was purchased for over $200,000 is nothing to sneeze at, the security measures that were taken to safe guard the business, and the personnel and the equipment all adds up to a tidy sum. But why stop there? You have returned home why not expand and think of ways you or the band may rejuvenate the local economy, such as concerts at Emerson Park, drawing thousands of people to hear artists you have become acquainted with, that have come here to record. A Rock Fest could be an asset, and instead of wasting energy arguing personal beliefs, focus on something that would benefit the local economy, and YOUR pocket book.
That is my point, You have enormous potential to do something here in Auburn that would and could make a difference. "

" Thank you dd--I appreciate that, and I hope you believe me when I say I really don't spend hardly any time trying to "convert" people to Atheism--because I have learned that it's a road one must choose to walk of their own volition. Nor so I spend time "trying to debunk God"--you won't see me on any street corner with a megaphone!
I AM, however, and WILL BE on the lookout for this type of nonsense, and I will speak out against the ridiculous and short-sighted premises which inform this kind of bunk; it's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it! "

" Oath, no oath, believe in God, or don't believe in God--what does any of it have to do with the opening of a restaurant?
I didn't see Dale's letter worth the time to reply, when there are so many more issues surrounding us to deal with.

However, I do think a more religious community does bring in more people. yet even some Christians who say they are, but act otherwise can be just as crime-hungry as a non-believer.

I think professionally, in two-cents you stated:
"I AM "important enough" to have somebody try to steal my stuff online"
On that note I feel your 'group laws' are tad of base.
You don't want the government to meddle in your life but you agree to be owned and bound in your personal life?
You and yours could do alot in your position to aid the community but instead choose to sit on the couch and complain about meaningless letters to the editor. "

" I agree with you Karl--what does your job have to do with an oath? I will agree with the fact that you spend way too much time trying to debunk God, but that doesn't make you any less of a good person. If you don't believe, then you don't believe. Not a big deal, but let those who do believe go on with their lives, and follow their religious duties to spread the lessons of Christianity. I have never met you Karl, but you don't seem like a bad guy. Just a little politically misled--:)Write ins for DD this November!! Say no to McCain and Obama. "

" Never will happen, Jerry--and I'm surprised and very disappointed that you would bring my profession and that of your friend into the forum this way. I'd love for you to telephone me, and I will gladly explain why.
As for "ridiculing God" and "Promote a positive image", well "the opinions expressed are the sole responsibility of the author.." I don't speak for my employer, and I neither presume, nor pretend to.
Secondarily, it is people like the religious fundamentalists who have shackled their children to signs and placards on Wegman's corners here who give the community a "bad image". It is the published opinions of the likes of Dale Bush's and Judy Ducayne's which promote a bad image of this town as well. Silly, 18th-century interpretations of scripture, and nonsensical postulations such as Mr Bush's do nothing to promote Auburn or to keep the infinitely-more progressive and liberal youth here; it only drives them away--did you see the article today about the exodus of youth in this community?
Perhaps Jerry, part of your obvious consternation with me is the fact that you KNOW what I've said here is correct--an oath is meaningless unless the person saying it is of reputable and sound moral character. This nonsense of griping about "taking God out of 'X'" is a well-worn, divisive, and distractive political tactic that serves only to push an agenda which seeks to undermine the foundation of the Church-and-State-Separation which forms the basis for the Constitution. How much air time and substantive dialogue has been wasted on this type of crap while the country has been led into the abyss by the Religious Right pushing this garbage?! I'm sick of seeing it being abused, and I would reckon that many, many people concur.
I know you might choose to disbelieve it, but people regularly come up to me in stores around Auburn to thank me for having the courage to speak out about the ridiculous religious opinions that sometimes find their way into print, both here and in Syracuse's paper. "

" It's a shame Karl Logan dedicates his time and energy fighting against God and Conservative values. In my opinion Mr Logan could best serve his community if he were to use his semi celebrity status promoting more positive changes in our community.
As Mr Logan is currently playing lead guitar for Mr Joe Demaio and the Manowar band, he could do more for this community if he were involved promoting community events or charity events while expanding the notoriety of his band. To ridicule God and publicly denounce God, in my opinion, does nothing to promote a positive image. It instead only reinforces the negative opinions and attitudes that are out there.
Promotion is a value many rockers have used to their benefit. This may be a lesson Mr Logan and Mr Demaio would want to consider, after all they are local boys who have made it to the big time, they have toured the world and have returned home to start their business. I personally don't believe it would be asking too much to ask a local to step up to the plate and use their popularity to help promote the city they grew up in. Imagine yearly concerts with various bands performing for the benefit of the community. Imagine the good that could come out of it. Imagine how that would change the way people view Manowar and the players. I guess one could only imagine what if. So Karl what if? Joe? What if? "
