An increase in the value of scrap metal has caused the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office to respond to an increase volume of calls related to the theft of metal materials from businesses and private property, deputies said Monday.
While the metal related theft had been steadily increasing during the past year, it has recently become a county-wide issue, deputies said.

In the past week alone, the department has responded to three separate incidents. On Townline Road in Springport, deputies responded to the theft of well drilling equipment valued at $3,000. In Brutus, more than 20 aluminum framed windows were missing from an unoccupied residence on Stevens Road. And in Victory, a $1,000 Kubota GF 1800 lawn and garden tractor with a mower deck was stolen from a property on Bell Road.

Deputies ask anyone with information regarding these thefts to call detectives at 253-1610.
