Cutting the AHS boys gymnastics a travesty

Sunday, August 10, 2008 12:46 AM EDT

Over the past few years, I have been deeply disheartened. As a graduate of AHS and a past captain of the Boys#, varsity gymnastics team, I try to stay abreast of school issues and news. Imagine my surprise when, on a recent family visit, I learned Auburn schools were under an austerity budget for the 2008-2009 school year, a first during my lifetime. Trying to understand how this occurred, I was doubly surprised to learn that after a three-vote defeat the board of education put the same budget up for vote without changing anything. No wonder it was voted down a second time. Making no attempt to address community concerns seems insensitive at the least.
Sadly, during my time at home, Katie Gehring, a friend and supporter of AHS gymnastics, was killed in a car crash. Three years ago, I met Mrs. Gehring when we fought to keep the gymnastics program from becoming a victim of budget cuts. At that time, we were partially successful, keeping the varsity but losing the modified program. This move was like putting a Band-Aid over a gunshot wound #- still fatal. It was a death sentence to the gymnastics program. I regret that I was not able to attend calling hours for Mrs. Gehring, because I had to return to New Orleans, where I am currently an English teacher at an alternative school. Presently, I#,d like to send my condolences to the Gehring family.

While writing this, I feel my condolences must also go to all boys at AHS for the loss of a program which changed many lives. Although a minor sport, it was a competitive part of the athletic program and played a large role in making many of Auburn#,s former gymnasts who we are today. It is indeed a travesty.

" When it's education or sports, sports lose. Suggest user fees for the participants or raise funds privately by the boosters of the sport. Make a deal with the administration. They pay for the coach we will raise funds for the rest of expenses. Or the last alternative is to join a private club. The schools main mission is to educate not train athletes. "

" It's a local school board problem, not a political Washington or Albany problem. The fact is BECAUSE THIS SPORT DOES NOT GENERATE BIG BUCKS TO THE GENERAL SCHOOL FUND, school boards tend to drop competitive activities because they become a liability not an asset. "

" Blame the war. WIthout the billions wasted, we might have grants to support something like this. Shame, really. "
