No one needs mail six days a week --- the government should cut the service to four days a week and watch the gas prices fall, plus save a ton of money that can be used to better the everyday life of Americans --- no brainer.

The state of Utah went to a four-day work week to save money. When is New York state going to do the same and also have a four-day school week?

Timmy Lattimore was a great mayor. I voted for him and if he runs again, I hope everyone will support him this time because Timmy was all over the place, never in one place.

Obviously your code enforcement officers are too busy bothering the citizens in Auburn to notice that the bathroom right across from their office. Maybe they should go in there and take care of that and leave the citizens alone.

Sorry u d/n make the Nolan calling hrs. It took the better part of 1.5 hrs standing in line weaving thru the rooms of Farrell's but it was extremely heartwarming to be a part of a reunion of SOOO many people we hadnt seen in years. And it was also a convergence of ALL of Auburn as anybody who is or isnt anybody was there extending hands in common bond. The 6 degrees of separation is so true because u would hug and reminicse and another would join in saying I remember you or I knew such and such, etc. Its a small world. I just couldnt look at Bob however. Jack is and Bob was a pair of thee best old dudes around. "

Hypocrites? Absolutely - that is their stock-in-trade. But, it may even be worse than that!

The first casualty of war is the truth, and I doubt that this is any exception.

It appears to many that Russia was provoked. Surprising? Not in the least. Is Dick Cheney is behind this? Probably so.

There is evidence to suggest that the US, NATO, and Israel were behind the attacks, and have been planning this now for well over a month. I don't know about you, but I have no faith in the corporate press to report this with substantial accuracy at this point. Remember how they were all acting like cheerleaders for the Iraq war? Five years later they're still lying about Iraq.

she recieved an email saying she needed to update her account info--SILLY her, to click the link and follow directions.
It was bogus. She lost 1,000,when she caught a few NOT hers transactions, but the bank returned it.

I have recieved many emails saying 'update your info' from banks I have never had.
The key is to never click the links.

Check your banking by going to their site directly.
I have never had a problem with shopping online or paying bills online.

Farmer Guy and I didn't make it to the Nolan calling hours - he just couldn't face the crowds and I didn't know the family well enough to go on my own. On top of that, we found a couple decent armchairs for a decent price at a second-hand place in Auburn and will be going to pick them up as soon as he borrows a pickup.

Condolences to the family, and maybe catch up to nl some other time.

Can't wait to join the rest of the world on broadband -- but will always keep the dial-up folks in mind, just as I have always kept the support staff POV in mind as a librarian and supervisor -- I spent many years in that boat and understand and sympathize - in both cases.

" Regarding online transactions - FG is exactly right. I'm not an expert either, but with 12 credits in network management and an online business (over 10 years), I too feel somewhat qualified to comment.

The transmission of your data via encrypted means (over a non-wireless method) is nothing to worry about. It's the entities with access to or holding your data that you need to be most concerned about - no different than everyday offline transactions.

Basically what I am saying is this - your information is safe as long as the people who handle it are trustworthy, AND are competent enough to manage a network properly, AND the information is encrypted.

Even in the most zealously guarded and protected networks, there is often little to stop an unscrupulous employee with access to your data from compromising it in some way.

With respect to credit cards, merchants are required to store your card information in an encrypted form and cannot store the cvv number, though this is not always done, in spite of strict guidelines and stiff penalties by the CC companies.

If anyone wants to be truly safe, the only way to do that is by not using credit cards at all, but this not very practical in today's economy.

I honestly don't worry about it much, though I do most of my business with known reputable businesses. OTOH, who would have thought that TJMAX would have been so lax, and there are numerous banks who have had serious security breaches which we'll never hear about. What we do hear about is the tip of the iceberg. But these breaches usually have nothing to do with online transactions themselves. "

" BTW, nature -- Farmer Guy and I may be going to the calling hours as well. I knew one of Bob's sons -- the one known as "Satch," but Farmer Guy knows the whole family. When I was playing football, we stopped in there to see if the sold pads -- thy didn't anymore, but old Mr. Nolan, Bob, who just passed away, put me on to some I could have for free from the community college. When we got there, the fella who helped us was a guy who'd played football with Farmer Guy at Carmel back in the day. Really small world. Anyway, Satch did come out and visit us when I was laid up with my broken leg, so all around, I'd have to say that qualifies them as good people.

I wouldn't know you, but I'd wager you could spot me. It's not a festive occasion, but if you do see me there, feel free to say hello. You know how it is -- weddings and funerals.... "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Aug 11, 2008 8:05 AM:

" BTW, what nature says on the subject of network security is also true. Don't forget malware that can be piggybacked onto stuff you download, then records keystrokes and transmits it back to the thieves.

We ran across a site in China which listed the links to the (hugely expensive) commercial subscription online research databases for hundreds of colleges and universities around the world, though mostly in the U.S. At the bottom of each list was someone's id and password. We found it because someone was using the id and password of an Ithaca College student and we caught it because our web guy noticed something strange in the logfiles. Turned out the IC student had no idea his id and password had been stolen or used in this fashion, and last we heard, they were not only changing that, but checking to see if his private info (SS#, bank account numbers, etc) had been compromised.

His life was turned upside down, and he hadn't filled in a stray form or anything - but they checked his computer and found some kind of spyware on it which had come in piggybacked to a download. "

" Thanks, AJ -- I'll take a look when I get into the new house and have time to have high speed internet set up for the first time -- I don't even try with dial-up.

The State needs 3 business days to process the Closing Cost Assistance "loan" (since you don't have to make payments and it's forgiven after 10 years, why do they call it a loan?) of $5,000, why did the seller's lawyer wait until the scheduled day of the closing to fax the necessary info to my lawyer? Maybe because the seller's moved out of state a couple months ago and their lawyer couldn't care less what trouble it causes me. Either that, or my lawyer is telling tales to blame someone else because HE didn't get the necessary pieces sent on time. All I know is that I don't trust any of them and there's something wrong with a system in which one party has no recourse if the other messes up.

Not everyone has internet, and not everyone should be forced to get it if they don't want it. I have a 93-year-old grandmother who will never have the internet -- she is also frail and has severe back troubles and constant pain. Her life should not be made any harder -- the real live mailman should keep coming to her house in person 6 days a week to help her manage her affairs in a timely fashion -- the old-fashioned way.

Karl: In regards to online transactions. I've had graduate work in network security and some small exposure to the real life work as well -- I'm not an IT professional, but I know enough to be able to comment intelligently on the subject.

For the most part, as long as the information is not being transmitted via wireless, which is never going to be as secure as a wired network just because of its (lack of) physical properties, transmitting your secure data is the least of your worries. Because people have been so leery of that aspect, reputable companies online have taken every possible measure to secure the transmission. Except for the use of a card at the gas station, where quite often they beam the account numbers and PINs via wireless back to a server in the building, the transaction moment is the most secure.

The thing about which people SHOULD worry is the security of the server on which your information is stored -- and it doesn't make one lick of difference if you gave your info to the company online, over the phone, by US Mail or in person in a store. They now HAVE your info and may very well not be guarding it well enough. The vast majority of compromised secure information happens at the storage level, not the transmission level. And what's more, security is compromised by someone who sees something in person -- like peeking over someone's shoulder when a password is being typed in, or finding the slip of paper on which someone wrote down their access info, or by a disgruntled employee who had legitimate access.

Worry more about those things -- which are not affected by the manner in which a company GOT your info -- it's all about how securely they STORE your info. "

Worse right now -- my closing was supposed to be Friday, then they didn't tell me until I asked on Thursday that it was delayed, originally until Monday, but then late on Friday, after I was asking yet again, they postponed it yet again until Wednesday. I planned for a week to move, including a weekend when I could get help from friends; now it is 2 days and no weekend, and all the things I had to put off at work until I get back can't be put off any further, so my window is very tight. I've also had to schedule and reschedule utilities up to three times for some.

And all thanks to some lawyer who couldn't be bothered to get the paperwork done on time and when he finally sent the stuff, it was for the wrong closing date.

I asked my buyer's agent and she told me that at least half of closings in New York State don't happen on time, and it is almost always only ever the lawyers -- not the buyers, not the sellers, not the banks, not the agents, not some odd circumstance, but lawyers who don't care if they mess up your life because they didn't get around to doing their bit on time. I am "lucky," says my agent, because although I am mightily inconvenienced (and this level of stress is very hard on my particular health problems), she's had people moving here from out of state, more than once, be held up by callously indifferent lawyers who left the buyers basically homeless with all their possessions, having to find and pay for temporary storage facilities and hotel accommodations.

She also tells me it's handled differently in many other states, some of which have some kind of escrow service which do the things lawyers do in this state -- but in a more timely and efficient manner.

Just more reason, along with our taxes, why businesses and people are more likely to LEAVE NYS than to come here.

My agent also says there is no recourse, which, of course, is why they can all play Marie Antoinette and not care if their arrogance and lack of consideration causes suffering for others.

Bring back the guillotine! ;-) "

" Right you are, Karl -- with their lousy human rights record, why would the Chinese bother about animals? Absolutely. I don't care if they are communist, I care that their government is rotten to their people, to other people, to animals and the environment. That doesn't mean there aren't lovely Chinese people in the world. My predecessor in the position I know hold at work is Chinese, born there, moved here, and one of the best people I have ever known. It's not a personal thing, it's a government thing.

Do we have abuses here too? Yes, of course we do, but at least we have laws that strive to be better than that. We do indeed have lots of problems with ineptitude, corruption and perversion of our rights and laws, but at least we started out with some.

My ex was an alternate rural route delivery person. It took all day and that was in a vehicle. When homes are often a quarter of a mile apart or more, you have to go by vehicle -- walking is not a viable option out here.

My mailman as a child was "Andy Candy" -- he was a sweet old man who took forever to deliver the mail because he stopped to talk with everyone -- but no one minded because he was so nice and aside from speed, the service was wonderful. Now my mom has a postal person who doesn't understand what the red flag is for -- she thinks she puts up the red flag when she puts mail in the box and she refuses to pick up any mail to take to the post office. So, my mom has to drive several miles any time she wants to send something out in the mail. This is just outside Detroit, where it is no use complaining. (We've also had items stolen from the mail in several occasions as they pass through the Detroit Post Office, postal inspectors or not.

How about Yule, Karl -- would that work? We usually celebrate Yule, even though we have it on the traditional Christmas date, because that is our culture even if we don't buy into the religious overlay (overlaid on the underlying Solstice tradition, not to mention Odin, who, according to the Eddas, hung himself from a wind-cold tree 9 long nights, then resurrected himself, not too unlike the Christ story). He also stated that the cost to send it back is more than first class postage because its a business reply. He also pointed out that its cost is based on weight. He suggests stuffing that envelope with junk mail, coupons, anything you have around the house and MAIL it back to the company that sent it to you. He claimed that this would slow down if not stop the delivery of those gimmick credit card apps. Well I did just what he suggested, it took about 6 months or so, but you know what?? I havent had an unsolicited credit card application show up in my mail box in months, where I used to get several a week! Give it a try it just might work for you too! "

" Whoever thinks the USPS should work less should be put on a route for 1 week. 6 days. Or to be "kind", have them work a tuesday after a holiday. Delivering mail is NOT an easy job. If anyone thinks it is, they should apply and see what is like. I have done it. I really enjoyed, yet it is no walk in the park. Full coverages, Political crap, and catalogs from everything that most people do not need. I could go on and on about the crap that actually has to be cased and delivered. Occasionally there are "easy" days when you can beat the Evaluated time. I worked in a facility that had to sort every piece of mail, as well as facilities using a sorting system called DPS. I believe Auburn has the DPS system. City carriers are always getting pushed. Too much mail and not enough help. If you want to do something nice for your mailperson, unsubscribe to the crap you throw out when you receive it. "

" for the longest time my niece thought the mailman was the best person ever! For I would send her candy or a small toy/treat -she thought the mailman gave it to her! Until she was old enough to understand how the process of mail actually works, and that auntie was sending things to her!

most banks and government offices are closed SAT & SUN, having mail 5 days would be enough.

personally I think I liked the old days when most places were CLOSED on sundays and it was used for a rest day or family day.

SCHOOL 4 days a week? Please no way!
I was shocked a week ago at a restaurant, the MANAGER couldnt get my 20% off coupon to work, so he gets out a pen and try to do the math, he CANT, I said that would be 4.80...he says "thanks I think I would have been here all day trying to get the answer!"

He had to be in his 30's..now I am not that great at math, but I could do it on paper if needed!
Most teens, with the machine to do it for them or a calculator cannot do math either!
I am all for innovation, but some things need to get back to the basics! "

Then I discovered motocross and offroad dirt bike racing--HurraH to Sundays in summer!
But mail makes every day like Christmas, er, I mean Solstice! LOL! "

" FG, you should be boycotting the Olympics.
It is a National disgrace and shame that we have sent our athletes to a COMMUNIST country with one of the worst human rights records in the world.
Not only that, but they support the illegal poaching of endangered bears, sharks, and other animals, all for their stupid, silly "virility" medicines. Yeah--that's what they need, right?
I refuse to watch even one minute. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Aug 9, 2008 5:34 PM:

" You know, these Olympics have been plagued by grief for US athletes -- injuries, visas denied, pollution, and now the murder of the father of the volleyball coach and injury to two others. I hope the Olympic Committee thinks long and hard before ever again setting the Olympics in such a risky country.

But, of course, George W., who never bothered to attend before, has just GOT to be there this time -- probably part of the deal to get his loans to finance his war. "

" cm, have you been watching the news? The consensus of every person knowledgeable about this case is that Cheney is surely $crewed. It's without question that he has committed an impeachable offense. There are witnesses from not only the US, but Great Britain as well, People who have seen the letter, and know that Cheney deliberately L-I-E-D in order to see his sick, twisted dreams (that's he's been dreaming ever since Nixon) realized finally by whatever means necessary.
Seriously, watch the news.
By the way--you can't type "$crewed", apparently? "

" Honestly, snail mail could be dropped a day at least for me as I use em ALOT. ALthough, I am one of the few people that do actually send real ltrs and cards thru the USPS and of course ebay, what I get in rtn isnt as much. If junk mail c/b eliminated/cut back and people that wanted mail more often could just get a box at the post office. If this were to happen concessions would also be made for times material. I just c it being a viable cut but then again why dont we just drop this bogus Bush crusade and save ourselves 3 trillion and put it back in services and teh protection of our own borders. "

" I think Utah started the 4 day work week this week for about 80% of employees. It will be interesting to see if it works. I can see many problems. As far as saving gas because you don't go to work, must be they figure employees will stay home all day. 10 hour work days, 8 was enough for me. People not having access to state services on Friday, not good. Not everybody has computers and not everything can be done online. Saving on building HVAC and lighting costs, to me it's 40 hours per week in either 4 or 5 days. It will be interesting, I cannot see this as a trend that will really take hold. "

I also agree with getting rid of so much junk mail.
this week I am getting tons of election stuff--county/court elections coming up.
From the main office of elections I recieved 4 of the same newsletters!

I have noticed a drop in the catalog deliveries, some like swiss colony and collections are only sending catalogs if you had placed an order.

And now back to 'paperwork'--lol "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Aug 9, 2008 9:58 AM:

" Boy, is that a dumb idea! Of course people need mail 6 days a week. Think of legal papers, for example, which you need by a deadline -- think how many people's lives would be messed up if the mail sat around somewhere for 3 or more days not being delivered.

No, what we need is more restrictions on junk mail! Think of all the people hours spent sorting and delivering it which could be saved, and of all the trees which wouldn't be needed for paper, and all the gas used up and spit out into the air to haul it around, and all the ink going into landfills, and all our wasted time, space and energy getting rid of it -- all this could be improved if we got rid of unsolicited marketing mail.

Deliver our mail daily, or at least 6 times a week, but let's cut it back to just OUR MAIL, not the junk we don't want. "

" Did you see the American Conservative magazine posted this yesterday?:
"An extremely reliable and well placed source in the intelligence community has informed me that Ron Suskind’s revelation that the White House ordered the preparation of a forged letter linking Saddam Hussein to al-Qaeda and also to attempts made to obtain yellowcake uranium is correct but that a number of details are wrong.

The Suskind account states that two senior CIA officers Robert Richer and John Maguire supervised the preparation of the document under direct orders coming from Director George Tenet. Not so, says my source. Tenet is for once telling the truth when he states that he would not have undermined himself by preparing such a document while at the same time insisting publicly that there was no connection between Saddam and al-Qaeda. Richer and Maguire have both denied that they were involved with the forgery and it should also be noted that preparation of such a document to mislead the media is illegal and they could have wound up in jail.

My source also notes that Dick Cheney, who was behind the forgery, hated and mistrusted the Agency and would not have used it for such a sensitive assignment. Instead, he went to Doug Feith’s Office of Special Plans and asked them to do the job."
-----so there can no linger be any debate about it, nor any question--
DICK CHENEY LIED ABOUT THE REASON FOR GOING TO WAR, AND COMMITTED AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE!
SECONDARILY, HE HAS ON HIS HANDS THE BLOOD OF 4,000+ AMERICANS AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF IRAQI'S!
HE SHOULD BE IMPEACHED AND TRIED AT THE HAGUE FOR WAR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY!!!
I'll bring the popcorn! (rubs hands together, laughs maniacally, and plops self down on couch in front of tele...) "
