CHEEKTOWAGA - A Canada-bound truck carrying 9,700 live chickens tipped on a Thruway ramp near Buffalo, closing the ramp for 1 1/2 hours.
State police say the truck rolled as it left the New York State Thruway for northbound Interstate 190 about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, scattering crates of chickens on the roadway.

The truck driver, 47-year-old Stanley Chesney, sustained scrapes on his left arm and leg.

Many chickens were killed. Surviving birds were being taken to the Erie County SPCA for evaluation. The SPCA also was asked to count the chickens killed in the crash.

The ramp was re-opened by 4:10 p.m.
