Auburn police are searching for a local man who they say is wanted on multiple felony charges, is possibly armed and could be dangerous.
Elmer P. Wilson III, 32, whose last known address is 45 Blauvelt Dr., Port Byron, is wanted on five charges stemming from two separate warrants.

Wilson is charged with one felony count of second-degree burglary, three felony counts of first-degree criminal contempt, one felony count of unlawful imprisonment and one misdemeanor count each of second-degree aggravated harassment and third-degree menacing.

Auburn detective Lt. Shawn Butler said Wednesday that all alleged incidents involved one victim, and the alleged burglary has taken place within the last week. However, Butler did not release further information about the incidents for the sake of protecting the victim, he said.

The APD has dealt with Wilson before, and he is known to carry knives, Butler said. And according to the official APD release, Wilson may be living in a tent in wooded areas or near Auburn.

" BTW, I know someone who really is named Freddy Krueger, not a bad guy at all, and there was nothing negative attached to the name at the time he was given it. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Aug 8, 2008 8:55 AM:

" An emotionally ill person can be a danger to himself and others, as is clearly the case here. People have every reason to be concerned, and the police and media have a duty to keep the public informed.

Imagine if the police and media knew this guy was on the loose but said nothing, then imagine he hurt someone. All you'd hear then in the paper is screaming about how the police (and media) knew and didn't tell the public.

And people would be right. This is a matter of public safety and people need to know. We can all hope it doesn't come to that, but until he is safely in custody, the fact is, we just don't know. Better safe than sorry.

What other criminals are doing is irrelevant to this discussion. Of course there are others, and we should be concerned about them as well, but that isn't the issue at hand, and it doesn't change a thing about this case. "

" Talk about small minds, how about people buying into system induced paranoia. " He is known to carry knives", and the small minds run with that statement. All of a sudden we have a person who is going to come into our homes & carve us up like the Thanksgiving turkey. My nephew (no one knows what the future holds, could be someone in your family, someday)is a very emotionally ill person, the choices he has made in dealing with a personal problem, tell the tale.
pb parent has hit the nail on the head, IF MORE ATTENTION WAS GIVEN TO THE POSITIVE, BEING NEGATIVE WOULDN'T BE SO ATTRACTIVE. "

pbparent wrote on Aug 7, 2008 11:18 AM:

" It is obvious that there are several small minds out there that are contributing the name to the crime(s). Well maybe they need a neuorologist to see if their small brain is working to full capacity. A person does what a person does because of the choices they make and their name has no significance to good bad or indifferent. Yes Elmer is a terrible name to drop on a birth certificate but it does not instill a persons personality, opinions and self being. He clearly has chosen to make his name stand out for the bad..maybe like Freddy Cruger and not like George Washington (good) but that is by choice...his choice. We need him off the streets along with the gangs too but this is real life not tv and does anyone every get rid of them totally?? NO!! Maybe the small mind people should look in their backdoor.

Our commuinity has more fish to fry and needs more peoples thoughts and inputs on other things than just the ones on the crimes. Come on wake up and comment on some good things like the Tully Runner go to the Olympics, etc. "

" like all things human, elmer likely grew comfortable breaking the laws as there is no, and i mean no pro-active policing. drive across auburn one time and it is too obvious. no respect for law is reinforced from simple things like vehicle & traffic codes. the codes were added when morals and respect for each other was trumped by greed & arrogance. now the police have conviced themselves that they have bigger fish to fry. no, no you silly keystone cops. like all things on earth, it is the simple stuff that brings our quality of life down. do your jobs police, since you are paid 60K and up to "risk your lives" here in auburn. keep people aware of the simple stuff through enforcement, period. we have a dozen cops making 60+K trying to arrest 6th graders. WE MUST CHECK OURSELVES. "

" Lots of families get "black sheep" -- good folks who have one bad penny in the bunch, no one quite knows why it happens. When it's this acute, it's a tragedy for the rest of the family.

For everyone's safety, I hope they catch him, give him his fair trial and if he is guilty, lock him away where he can't hurt honest, decent citizens. Better yet would be if he just turned himself in without hurting anyone else.

Yes, of course there are other dangerous people out there, some insidiously less obviously dangerous. Nonetheless, it is disturbing for people to think about an armed-and-dangerous man lurking in the woods somewhere near our homes.

The name business is a personal bug-a-boo for me -- not that it's Elmer, but that I have strong feelings that it is a bad thing to do to a kid to give him someone else's name -- too many pre-set comparisons. I know it is a very personal choice, and other people feel strongly about carrying on family names, but I personally feel every child should be allowed to be himself and have his very own name; I personally believe it is psychologically healthier and better for individuals to not be born with the need to live up to (or live down!) someone else's name.

But like I said, that's just my own pecadillo. "

AuntC wrote on Aug 6, 2008 10:47 PM:

" I agree totally about this not being about his name. I just felt the need to comment on the immature chatter about his name.
I'm sure he will be caught and he will pay the penalty for his choices, if he's taken alive. When he's behind bars, do yourself a favor & check out the Cayuga County Sheriff's website & look at the sex offenders list, then let me know how safe you feel, with these people walking the streets every day, no matter where you live. This will soon be over & someone new will be the topic of discussion. "

" walking a mile in his shoes would not make me feel safer since there is a reverse 911 call out now about him in my area. My FAVORITE uncle was named Elmer, not sure a name should be the focus of interest here. For the rest of us, I hope only a mile is left walking free in those shoes so we can all feel a little better about our homes near the woods. "

iowa wrote on Aug 6, 2008 8:31 PM:

" It really doen't matter where I live. It have known the Wilson family for years.Just stop and think while you are calling Elmer the 3rd names and making fun about his name, stop and thing what is parnets and grandmother is going thrugh with name calling.I knew young Elmer's greatgrandmother. That woman raised 21 kids and all of them are great kid. As the Aunt said that was her father's he has been dead for years let him rest in peace and leave the family alone. "

AuntC wrote on Aug 6, 2008 7:21 PM:

" This comment is in regards to the people who feel this is something worth making jokes about, GROW UP...perhaps people like you tormented him about his name as a child. He is my nephew & he carries my fathers name, nothing to be ashamed of, as he did his best to take care of business in his 37 years.
Yes, ElmerIII has chosen the wrong path, yet I feel unless you have walked a mile in his shoes, maybe you should think about the passage in the bible " what you cast upon the waters will return to you ten fold" Rots to be You in that case !!!! "

" Iowa, are you for real, where do you live? Its not Elmers fault? Elmer is 32 years old and you say its the gangs in Auburn fault. Do you want to buy a bridge in New York/ "

iowa wrote on Aug 6, 2008 3:50 PM:

" I went to school with this boy's grandmother. I also knew Elmer's grandfather and also his father. I know that Elmer's father was brought up a decent kid and never got into trouble. It is to bad. But I don't think that it was Elmer's fault that he got in trouble. I think that blame should go the street gangs that they got in Auburn. The police should do something about it. Its these gangs that are the cause for everything. They dare there the young people to do these things or they are not their friend. Look at the gangs that there are in Auburn then wonder why things happen. So let's stop making fun of the name Elmer. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Aug 6, 2008 3:01 PM:

" Someone who's grandfather was Elmer, and each generation just had to stick the next with their same name.

I don't think this guy is "on the streets" -- the article seems to indicate he's living in the woods, so take care if you're going for what you think will be a nice peaceful hike. "
